It has now emerged as an epicenter of art and culture. On our walk we will visit properties with concentrations of art galleries, see a lot of the fantastic Street Art, and view the remnants of the brewery business and the mansions on the boulevard where the industry executives lived. Our walk ends at the Kosciuszko St. subway stop on the BMT J line with easy access back to Manhattan. This hike is joint with Outdoors Club Inc., and you need to be on only one Club’s going list. NEW DATE Sunday OCT 4th One of the Jewels of Hudson to do along the Hudson River is visit Pollepel Island, a tiny jewel abandoned in the setting of the Hudson Highlands. Bannerman Castle, is an iconic Hudson River. Millionaire Francis Bannerman bought Pollepel Island in 1900 and started building a storehouse for his Military munitions. He personally designed to resemble a Scottish castle, now known as Bannerman Castle. ITs an uninhabited place, accessible only by boat, it was considered haunted by some Indian tribes and thus became a refuge for those trying to escape them. These superstitions and others promoted by later Dutch sailors make for many fanciful tales. Even the name Pollepel (Polopel) originated with a legend about a young girl named (Polly) Pell who was romantically rescued from the breaking river ice and landed on the island shore, where she was promptly married to her sweetheart, who rescued her and her companion. We will also see the new Davis Center area where the Lasker skating rink used to be as well the significant changes to the landscape up north which now conforms more closely to the original design of the Park. I will stop a number of times to very briefly talk about what we are seeing. That means I talk and you listen or make believe you are listening! Over the years this group has conducted numerous tours of Central Park and I have led several tours of Northern and Southern Central Park for the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). This event will be even better. Much better! We are going to keep things moving as much as possible. On this hiking tour we hope to visit areas such as the Ramble where there will be one short climb, Conservatory Gardens, the Ravine, the Great Hill, the Blockouse and the North Woods where there are waterfalls. Central Park is often considered a work of art and hopefully we can show you why! Nantucket & Newport RI on Labor Day Weekend

We'll leave Saturday morning and spend most of the day exploring Newport, with its gorgeous coastline, historic Gilded Age mansions, harbor, charming streets, shops, restaurants and famous Cliff Walk. Newport has a great mix of history, scenery and things to do, so everyone can choose what interests them most. On Sunday, we'll take a high-speed ferry to Nantucket and spend the day exploring the island. Nantucket is a completely different experience, historic cobblestone streets, beautiful beaches, lighthouses, old whaling-era architecture, boutique shops, galleries, seafood and plenty of places to relax by the water. We'll explore the historic downtown, visit the Whaling Museum, rent a bike, head to the beach, check out the lighthouses, or just wander around and enjoy the island atmosphere. We'll be staying both night conveniently close to both locations. On Monday we can see everything we didn't have a chance on Saturday in Newport. And we'll be heading back toward NYC around 5 PM. There will be plenty of flexibility throughout the weekend, and we'll put together a full itinerary with suggested activities, restaurants, ferry details and things to do for anyone who wants to follow a plan.
