This walk in Bushwick is as much fun as any of the urban hikes we do. After brief stops at a vibrant outdoor market and stunning Danish Cafe, there is much more to see and enjoy. Bushwick was a major center of beer brewing for many years, but on the night of July 13, 1977 was devastated by looting and arson during a major blackout in New York City. It has now emerged as an epicenter of art and culture. On our walk we will visit properties with concentrations of art galleries, see a lot of the fantastic Street Art, and view the remnants of the brewery business and the mansions on the boulevard where the industry executives lived. Our walk ends at the Kosciuszko St. subway stop on the BMT J line with easy access back to Manhattan. This hike is joint with Outdoors Club Inc., and you need to be on only one Club’s going list. We will walk at a steady, moderate but not slow pace over a distance of around 4 miles, stopping at places of interest. There will be no lunch stop, so bring some snacks along if you wish. NEW DATE Sunday OCT 4th One of the Jewels of Hudson to do along the Hudson River is visit Pollepel Island, a tiny jewel abandoned in the setting of the Hudson Highlands. Bannerman Castle, is an iconic Hudson River. Millionaire Francis Bannerman bought Pollepel Island in 1900 and started building a storehouse for his Military munitions. He personally designed to resemble a Scottish castle, now known as Bannerman Castle. ITs an uninhabited place, accessible only by boat, it was considered haunted by some Indian tribes and thus became a refuge for those trying to escape them. These superstitions and others promoted by later Dutch sailors make for many fanciful tales. Even the name Pollepel (Polopel) originated with a legend about a young girl named (Polly) Pell who was romantically rescued from the breaking river ice and landed on the island shore, where she was promptly married to her sweetheart, who rescued her and her companion. We will also see the new Davis Center area where the Lasker skating rink used to be as well the significant changes to the landscape up north which now conforms more closely to the original design of the Park. I will stop a number of times to very briefly talk about what we are seeing. That means I talk and you listen or make believe you are listening! Over the years this group has conducted numerous tours of Central Park and I have led several tours of Northern and Southern Central Park for the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC). This event will be even better. Much better! We are going to keep things moving as much as possible. On this hiking tour we hope to visit areas such as the Ramble where there will be one short climb, Conservatory Gardens, the Ravine, the Great Hill, the Blockouse and the North Woods where there are waterfalls. Central Park is often considered a work of art and hopefully we can show you why! A cold mountain swimming hole on a summer day is one of them. We're heading deep into the Catskills for a full day of hiking, swimming, and doing absolutely nothing in the best possible way. After a short guided hike through lush forest trails, we'll arrive at one of the most beautiful and secluded swimming holes in the region, surrounded by nature, far from the noise, and exactly what a summer day should feel like.
