Whale Watching: Watsons Bay to Maroubra!!! 18km Medium

Fri, Jun 5, 11:30 PM
From Sydney Outdoors Meetup Group
4.7

**Whale Watching Day!!! Watson’s Bay to Maroubra 18 km (Medium)** We ferry from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay and commence our walk out of South Head, and along the Federation walk, navigating Diamond Bay and Dover Heights before dropping down to North Bondi. Leaving Bondi Beach behind, we strike out for Tamarrama and Bronte, where we stop for a nice lunch break of 45 minutes. Following lunch we head for Maroubra via Clovelly and Coogee Beaches. We stop at Mistral Point before marching into Maroubra where we will invade the Maroubra Seals Club for a tasty beer (and food if desired - its pretty tasty, I have to say!), before grabbing a bus back to the City. The ocean front scenery on this walk is stunning! Hopefully we will spot **Humpback whales** during the day; it is likely that we will. We should arrive at Maroubra by about 4:30pm. Please **bring photo ID**, to gain entrance to the Maroubra Seals Club. **Distance:** 18 km **Type of Walk:** Almost the entire walk is along ocean front promenades. **Difficulty:** Medium, because of the distance. If you are unsure about the distance but would like to test yourself this is a walk for you: there are plenty of get-out points. **Walking Pace:** We will average 4.5 km per hour. **Meeting Place and Transport:** We catch the Watsons Bay Ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 2. The Ferry leaves Circular Quay at 9:45 am and arrives at Watsons Bay at 10:08am. Transport back from Maroubra is by bus; it is a high frequency service. **What to bring:** Good walking shoes/trail runners; 1.5 litres of water, refill available along the way; hydrolytes; one snack and one lunch; light rain jacket depending on conditions; sunscreen and a cap or hat with a wide brim. **LUNCH CAN BE PURCHASED AT BRONTE.** **Suggested Donation:** $10 **Pub:** Maroubra Seals Club By RSVPing to this event, you (and your guests) agree to and are bound by the terms and conditions of SOMG which you can view here: [Sydney Outdoors Meetup Group Discussions](https://www.meetup.com/sydney-outdoors-meetup-group/discussions/?eventOrigin=home_groups_you_organize) If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. I look forward to seeing you on this walk. I will post my mobile number closer to the day. Ted

Whales Migration along Kamay Botany National Park To Cronulla Beach!

From Aussie Explorers

**We will definitely see whales as we walk along the coast!** **We meet at the bus stop opposite Cronulla Train Station and catch “Transdev” Bus 987 to Kurnell at 9.50am (the bus leaves at 10am).** **When the bus drops us off, we are at the edge of Kamay Botany National Park and follow the Monument Track past Sutherland Point (named after a sailor on the Endervour) to Captain Cook’s landing place on 28 April in 1770. This is considered the birthplace of modern Australia.** **In 2020, to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s landing, 3 magnificent large bronze sculptures by 3 aboriginal women artists were added to the coastline.** **We then follow the Muru Trail to the whale watching platform at Cape Solander.** **From here, we follow the Cape Bailey Track to the Boat Harbour Aquatic Reserve with plenty of lookouts from which to spot whales, and then start the 4.5km beach walk that takes us all the way to Wanda Beach (at low tide so the sand is compacted and easier to walk on) and we jump onto the Esplanade walkway all the way to Cronulla.** **We're doing on a low tide day to make it easier to walk on the sand!** **Following lunch at Cronulla we complete the 5km loop around Bass Point, Flinders Point and Gunnamatta Bay which leads returns us to Cronulla and the train station.** **We will aim to finish by 4pm at Cronulla Beach, from which we walk to the nearby train station and can catch a train back to Sydney.** **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** **DISTANCE: 20 kms.** **GRADE: Moderate because of the distance. It’s mostly flat (although walking on sand can be a little hard for some).** **NOTE: No exit points until we get to Wanda Beach. Please let the Host know if you leave the walk.** **IMPORTANT INFORMATION:** · **Be Prepared: Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring at least 2L of water (no refills after Kurnell until Wanda Beach). I recommend hydralyte tablets, snacks and sun protection.** · **Follow Instructions: Please follow the instructions of the Host at all times and keep the Host within sight.** **RSVP Responsibly and Be Ontime at the Designated Meeting Point: Update your RSVP if you can’t make it.** **GRATUITY: $10 applies to this event which can be paid in cash on the day or PayID is 0439 344987 Cristian Sylvestre.** **\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*** **DISCLAIMER: Your health and safety is our priority and we take care to minimize risk and avoid accidents and injuries.** **However, Organizers and Hosts are not responsible for your health and safety and do not accept any liability for accidents and injuries that may occur during Meetup activities and events.
