Cantonese Parents Meetup #5
Sun, Aug 9, 10:30 PMHi! Let's get together for a Summer park hang! We'll plan for Vista Hermosa park again, which I feel like despite attempted efforts, we haven't actually been back to since our first gathering! The area closer to the park's **West entrance** is shady. We'll set up under the trees. Hope to see you guys there! Bring any Canto books, toys or resources you might want to share with the group. Picnic blanket recommended but no fret if you show up without one. **1 RSVP per family** Whether or not you're bringing your fam, please RSVP for just yourself to leave space for others to RSVP (we're capped by Meetup to 10 RSVP guests). **How my personal journey is going:** My daughter is now 2, and extremely talkative. She mostly speaks in English but will say random things in Cantonese. She can say most of the colors in Canto (purple and yellow she gets stuck on for some reason) and even if she doesn't necessarily say them, she knows her body parts and animals in Canto. I consider this to be a mild miracle considering how often I (don't) speak to her in Cantonese (a mix of my own Canto limitations, and my perceived ability for her to understand instructions/respond to me when I say more unfamiliar things in Canto). Let's all support and encourage each other and our kids! **Intentions:** * Create a fun, friendly, and supportive community * Improve each other's Cantonese by providing more opportunities to speak and learn - both for parents and kids * Bond with other Cantonese-speaking parents (or non-Canto parents trying to learn) and share the joys and challenges of trying to raise Cantonese-speaking humans * Normalize Cantonese for our kids by creating a place where other kids also speak Cantonese * Promote Cantonese language and culture, and both surface and serve the Canto-speaking community scattered throughout LA * Share tips and Canto resources **If you can't make this date/time, but are interested in the group, please message me. I'd love to hear from you.**

Nibble Night - DEFCON Soldering Meetup
Sun, Aug 2, 2:00 AMIt's almost time for DEFCON! The ScriptKitty team is building flipper-compatible Mesh radios for Defcon classes, and you can learn surface mount soldering at Null Space Labs! Come build with us, or just hang out and see how hacking tools are made. If you have experience with soldering or pick and place for surface mount electronics, come join us for a fun night of music, pizza, and making electronics! We’ll be giving LoRa node kits to volunteers who can help us build for more than 2 hours, but anyone is welcome to hang out and see how electronics are made (and sometimes destroyed)! We’ll be building the Nibble Zero, a Flipper Zero compatible LoRa mesh radio, that also works just fine on its own! These cute Mesh nodes will be powering workshops at Defcon teaching beginners how to get started with Meshcore, Meshtastic, and Reticulum. If you’d like to volunteer, please [Sign up here!](https://www.universe.com/events/nibble-night-defcon-soldering-meetup-tickets-237NT8) [https://www.universe.com/events/nibble-night-defcon-soldering-meetup-tickets-237NT8](https://www.universe.com/events/nibble-night-defcon-soldering-meetup-tickets-237NT8) We have limited table space available, but anyone is welcome to hang out at NSL! We'll try to get food to cover anyone who signs up to solder above!

🎲 Games & Thrones 🏰 Thursdays 👑
Thu, Jul 30, 11:44 PM🌙 INVITATION TO MOONLIGHT ACADEMY 🌙 Dungeons & Dragons Campaign Who: Beginners and veteran players are equally welcome. The doors to the academy are opening—both in Hollywood and in the Forgotten Realms. You are formally invited to cross the threshold into a living story of survival, ancient magic, and cosmic defiance. 📖 The Legend So Far (Our Story Synopsis) Deep within the untamed Whispering Woods stands Moonlight Academy, a monolithic, forgotten fortress of ancient celestial magic. For centuries it lay in ruins, choked by briars and feared by the outside world. Today, two desperate fugitives have sought refuge within its hollow halls, bound by shared isolation: Vhaenyra Aelarys: A Drow (Dark Elf) Druid who fled the lethal, cutthroat politics of the Underdark. She has claimed the ruins as a sanctuary, using her nature magic to gently heal the stone and restore the academy to its former glory—a promised haven for outcasts. Leucis Therai: A queer Tiefling Cleric who narrowly escaped a horrific ritual sacrifice by his former coven. Betrayed by his lover, his desperate prayers at the castle gates awakened a dormant, divine moon deity within the ruins, transforming him into a vessel of radiant starlight. The world outside is closing in. Insular, paranoid local villagers view the Academy as a den of monsters and are preparing for war. Fraudulent local psychics are stirring up anti-magic panic. Meanwhile, lethal assassins from the Underdark and vengeful witches from the coven are tracking the duo’s magical signatures. Will Moonlight Academy rise to become a permanent stronghold for the marginalized, or will it be burned to the ground by fear and vengeance? That is up to you. 🔮 Choose Your Path: How You Can Join the Circle As a recurring campaign, players can drop in and out as their schedules allow. Moonlight Academy is actively looking for allies, refugees, and travelers to help fortify its walls. When creating a character, you can choose from three main thematic paths: 1. The Academy Refuges & Outcasts Like Vhaenyra and Leucis, your character is someone traditionally feared, misunderstood, or hunted by common society. You have fled your past and found safety behind the academy’s walls.Recommended Classes: Sorcerers, Warlock (seeking a break from a bad patron), Rogue, or Bard.Recommended Races: Tiefling, Drow, Orc, Changeling, or any lineage seeking a safe haven. 2. The Guardians of the Wild You are a local protector of the Whispering Woods, a rogue element from the nearby settlements, or a member of a local, secret coven. You see through the paranoia of the villagers and have chosen to ally with Vhaenyra to restore the natural balance and protection of the Academy. Recommended Classes: Druid, Ranger, Nature/Twilight Cleric, or Barbarian. Recommended Races: Wood Elf, Firbolg, Halfling, or Human. 3. The Redeemed & Detached Perhaps you were originally sent to spy on the academy, or you were an acolyte from Leucis's old coven who realized the leadership went too far. You have turned your back on your former masters to help defend the ruins from within. Recommended Classes: Fighter, Paladin (Oath of Devotion or Ancients), or Monk. Recommended Races: Any race aligned with a complicated backstory of redemption. ✨ How to Secure Your Seat at the Table Spaces at the gaming table are limited each week to ensure everyone gets a chance to shine. Character Creation: Start at Level 1. Use standard rules (5th Edition). If you need help building your character, arrive 30 minutes early and our Dungeon Master will help you weave your backstory directly into the fabric of Moonlight Academy. RSVP: Speak with the staff at the front counter, or reserve your spot for this week’s session. Bring your dice, your magic, and your resolve. Let’s build a sanctuary together. — 🎲 A witchcraft store hosting weekly tabletop board game nights alongside *Game of Thrones* screenings would look like a **deeply atmospheric, community-centric sensory experience** that seamlessly blends dark fantasy pop culture with real-world occult practices. Instead of a brightly lit, sterile game shop, the space would feel like a cozy, secretive tavern or an ancient castle solar. The Aesthetic and Spatial Layout The store must carefully balance retail space with active gathering areas, using lighting and layout to create distinct "zones." * **The Hearth & Screen:** A dedicated viewing lounge with a projector casting onto a blank wall or a tapestry frame. Seating consists of plush velvet couches, floor cushions, and faux-fur throws to mimic the Great Hall of Winterfell. * **The Gaming Tables:** Massive, dark wood tables illuminated by dim, warm overhead lighting or battery-operated amber candles so players can read card text without ruining the moody ambiance. * **The Retail Borders:** The perimeter remains a fully functioning shop. Bookcases filled with grimoires, herb jars, and crystals act as the literal backdrop for the games. Weekly Timeline & Event Schedule To maximize retail sales and keep the evening structured, the night should run on a tight, repeatable schedule. [ 5:30 PM ] Doors Open & Pre-Show Social (Tarot pulls, shopping discounts) [ 6:00 PM ] Game of Thrones: Episode 1 [ 7:00 PM ] Intermission & Thematic Ritual (Brief candle lighting or tea service) [ 7:15 PM ] Game of Thrones: Episode 2 [ 8:15 PM ] Tabletop Gaming Open Play Begins [ 10:30 PM] Event Wrap-up & Closing Thematic Integration: Blending Magic with Westeros To make this unique to a *witchcraft* store rather than a standard comic shop, the event should explicitly tie the show's lore to real-world esoteric practices. * **"House Allegiance" Tarot Readings:** Before the episodes start, a staff reader could offer quick, three-card pulls based on Westerosi houses (e.g., House Stark for survival/ancestors, House Targaryen for ambition/rebirth). * **Themed Ritual Intermissions:** During the 15-minute gap between episodes, the host could light a specific incense or a "Melisandre-inspired" flame ritual to clear the room's energy before the next story arc. * **The Potions Bar:** Serving specific loose-leaf tea blends or botanical mocktails during the screenings, such as a lavender-chamomile "Milk of the Poppy" for relaxation or a spicy ginger-hibiscus "Fire and Blood" brew. The Tabletop Game Selection The board games available after the show should mirror the themes of political intrigue, dark fantasy, prophecy, and witchcraft. * **Thematic Strategy Games:** Title selections like *Dune: Imperium*, *Oath*, or the official *Game of Thrones: The Board Game* for players who love intense faction betrayal and resource management. * **Occult & Modern Witchcraft Games:** Games like *Middara*, *Arkham Horror*, *Betrayal at House on the Hill*, or *The Grimm Forest* to lean heavily into monsters, spells, and gothic folklore. * **Social Deduction Games:** Faster, high-energy hidden-role games like *Blood on the Clocktower* or *Werewolves* (re-skinned to fit fantasy houses) that keep the entire room laughing and arguing together. Operational and Legal Considerations Running a public event involving copyrighted media and community gaming requires a few practical guidelines. * **Copyright and Licensing:** Showing *Game of Thrones* publicly for commercial gain can violate HBO's terms. To stay compliant, the store should frame the evening as a **free community club night** where no ticket is required to watch, while generating revenue through retail sales, game rentals, or the potions/tea bar. * **Aroma and Sensory Control:** Because board gamers need to concentrate and watch a screen, the store should swap out heavy, smoke-producing charcoal incense for subtle reed diffusers or wax melters so attendees don't leave with watery eyes. * **Noise Management:** Screenings require silence, while board games generate loud cheering and laughing. Keeping the schedule strictly divided (Screenings *then* Games) ensures the two activities never fight for acoustic dominance.

Kronia Potluck 2026
Sat, Jul 25, 6:00 PMThis will be a casual social event. Please bring a snack, drinks, or a small dish to share with others (*POTLUCK STYLE!*). Post on Discord #special-events or email Justin if you have questions: justin@lastoics.com **More info**: The *Kronia* was an Athenian festival in the era of the Ancient Greek Stoics held in honor of Cronus (*Kronos*) during the summer. It was appropriated by the Romans and celebrated by them as *Saturnalia* (Saturn was the Roman equivalent of Cronus). They both commemorated a mythical "golden age" that existed when Cronus/Saturn ruled the world long ago. In this time, there would have been peace, prosperity, and freedom among all people. For Stoics, these are things that are always within reach—they do not depend on external circumstances—and we can reflect on this during the event. Enjoy the peace that comes from fostering a sense of community with others; enjoy prosperity by recognizing that your happiness does not depend on anything outside your control; and enjoy the freedom that comes from always having your moderate desires satisfied. *Do I need to prepare for the event?* **NO. Though, there may be a handout at the event itself.** ***AGAIN, PLEASE CONTACT JUSTIN IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.***
