BACK TO SCHOOL! Spades Syndicate September Meetup!

Sat, Sep 19, 8:00 PM
From The Spades Syndicate Spades Club

September is that time...back to school, new beginnings, fresh starts, and high spirits. Whether you're coming back after summer or joining us for the first time, this is your chance to find your groove and claim your spot in the Spades Syndicate family. **Rookie or veteran, YOU BELONG HERE MY LOVE!** We're all here to level up, learn from each other, and maybe, *just maybe*, catch someone slipping (in the most respectful way possible). The energy is supportive, the trash talk is light, and the wins? Those are FUN. This is the month to figure out your rhythm, get your good time in, and discover your tribe! \*Remember...food and drink is always included

**FIRST WORKSHOP ATTENDANCE IS FREE.** Bring a friend. **After 1st visit: Donation only.** Collected during workshop. QR codes to Venmo and PayPal provided, Or cash. The aim is to cover the expenses of the workshop. It's not set up to be a money-making venture. **TO WORKSHOP PAGES** OF YOUR SCREENPLAY: YOU 👉MUST👈🏼 HAVE AN RSVP 👉AND👈🏼 WRITE "PAGES" AS A COMMENT HERE ON THIS EVENT PAGE. Read details below... We meet in the community room of the HULU building/Colorado Center, **2500 Broadway, Santa Monica** CA 90404. **First floor.** **Short walkway to glass door right near street (by "HULU" sign next to sidewalk)**. **• Tribe consists of writers and some actors helping writers to sharpen their screenplays, and their skills in the craft.** • A diversity of ages, life experiences, and voices, are helpful to have in the workshop. Ages 16 and over. • Maintain your RSVP status. If you RSVP, but can't attend: • Please, cancel your RSVP ASAP. You do so on this MeetUp page. It prevents writers from spending money to make copies of their script pages for you. • To sign up for having your script pages read by and get feedback from the group: • First RSVP to sign up for pages. • If you sign up for pages, and change your mind: DELETE your pages comment AND leave a post "Canceling pages." This gives another writer time to prepare pages. **• Canceling pages does not cancel your RSVP.** If you ARE NOT going to attend, please: ALSO cancel your RSVP. **• Sign up for pages: A, B, C, D...** A • **Know you need to bring sets of pages for those who attend so they can both read and write notes on them.** B • **Get the books:** 1. **Screenplay Repair Manual** by Daniel John Carey 2. **The Screenwriter's Bible** by David Trottier 3. **Dr. Format Tells All** by David Trottier C • **Have an RSVP** D • **Be one of the first 4 to sign up for pages.** **• We workshop feature and short film screenplays, and episodic, anthology, limited/mini series, serial series, and single cam sitcom screenplays, and also multi-cam sitcom scripts.** (We previously didn't workshop multi-cam scripts. Writers may want to consider that multi-cam sitcoms are not as popular as they were ten or more years ago. This makes getting a sitcom produced even less likely - unless you are an established sit-com writer, or an established stand-up comic. But maybe you will be the person who is successful in getting a new sitcom produced.) **• WE DO NOT WORKSHOP SOAP OPERA, MUSICAL, NC-17, OR X SCRIPTS.** **• Please format scripts in industry-standard 12 point Courier font**. **• Take one script through the workshop at a time from the first page to "The End."** **• Own the material in the script.** No plagiarism. The script has to be something you can copyright. (No lyrics, poetry, book excerpts, life stories, or other material to which you do not own the rights. For instance: don't use Beatles song lyrics in your script.) **• The workshop is as good as the participants make it.** **Aim to write engaging scripts with broad market, investor & distributor appeal, and that may advance the careers of actors, directors, DPs, editors, and you.** **👉A screenplay is an investment proposal for film financiers.👈🏼** **To sign up for pages: 1, 2, 3.** 1. **RSVP.** 2. **After RSVPing, type “pages” in the comments section.** **Bring enough copies of your script pages for everyone who has RSVPd.** (Closest Staples copy center location is on Bundy just north of Olympic open to 6 p.m. You can print from your laptop - the attendant can tell you how. Make sure the copy machine is set to black and white, and NOT color - so you aren't paying three times as much for color copies when all you need is B&W. You can also ask the attendant to make sure it is the thinner paper, and not the heavier paper that costs more). Also, print double sided copies to save $ and paper. **We write feedback directly on the pages, and also give verbal feedback.** **Be prepared to assign your character dialogue to be read out loud by various people in attendance, and assign one person to be the narrator of the scene headings and description.** **We give verbal feedback after each set of pages.** **As a writer receives feedback, they are to be silent, even if asked questions. Listen. Take notes.** Feedback you consider "wrong" could instead be helpful in giving you some excellent ideas. Welcome it. Even if you then do the direct opposite in your script revision. **Sometimes attend when your pages aren't being read.** This will build your skills in unexpected ways. Participate in helping other writers with their scripts. **👉Please stay for the entire workshop.👈🏼** **If you are not of the first 4 signing up for pages,** you can type **"backup pages"** as a comment – in case anyone cancels pages. **After you workshop 13 pages** (or the entire episode of a multi-cam) – **before you bring in the next pages – READ THE ENTIRE SCRIPT to give it a wave of polish.** **If you only have a few pages remaining unworkshopped,** still bring in 13 pages of the script = the remaining pages + pages before it = re-workshopping some of the previous pages. **Each script is the intellectual property of the writer.** **“If you’re not early, you’re late.”** – John Ritter

Nibble Night - Bsides Soldering Meetup

Nibble Night - Bsides Soldering Meetup

Sun, Sep 13, 2:30 AM
From Null Space Labs
4.9

Nibble Night is back again! The ScriptKitty team is building cat-shaped, flipper compatible Mesh radios for classes at BSides events this year. Come help us build Nibbles, learn surface mount soldering, and get your own Meshtastic/Meshcore radio! Come build with us, or just hang out and see how hacking tools are made. If you have experience with soldering or pick and place assembly (or want to learn), come join us for a fun night of music, pizza, and making electronics! We’ll be giving LoRa node kits to volunteers who can help us build for more than 2 hours, but anyone is welcome to hang out and see how electronics are made (and sometimes destroyed)! We’ll be building the Nibble Zero, a Flipper Zero compatible LoRa mesh radio, that also works just fine on its own! These cute Mesh nodes will be powering workshops at Bsides events, teaching beginners how to get started with Meshcore, Meshtastic, and Reticulum. We have limited table space available, but anyone is welcome to hang out at NSL!
