Curious Walks (in Pasadena, CA)

Please join us for the first of many 5-mile walks aimed at cultivating deep, thoughtful, and interesting conversations! Ultimately, we hope to spark connection, learning, friendship, and community — all while getting exercise in the great outdoors and being curious! **How does this work?** The concept is simple! ***Before the event, come up with a thought-provoking, weighty question or idea that you’ve been thinking about or would like to explore.*** *You need this for the event!* When we gather, we’ll all briefly introduce ourselves and share our question or idea. Then we’ll start walking and use those questions or ideas as launching pads for conversation. The intention is to leapfrog over small-talk and get into meaningful discussion. During the walk, please move fluidly among different walkers if you’d like to! About those questions or ideas, . . . don’t sweat them too much. Anything thoughtful or thought-provoking will do. Have fun with it! Here are some examples: “How would you want to be remembered after you’re gone, and why?” “I’ve been thinking about the concept of time, how it’s experienced, what speeds it up or slows it down, and I’d like to explore that today.” “Can we ever really know who we are when we’re never fully unbiased in thinking about ourselves?” “What is the most courageous thing you’ve ever done, and how did it affect you?” The route runs through incredibly beautiful neighborhoods around the Caltech campus, particularly to its south and east, as well as through the lovely campus itself. Portions of the route are shaded by mature trees. **Is this event right for you?** We are walking 5 miles on mainly flat terrain at a moderate (\~20 minutes/mile) or moderate-plus pace. This should allow for conversation while getting in some nice exercise. Please ascertain that this distance and pace is comfortable for you, as there is no “sweep.” The organizer is an unpaid community volunteer who wants everyone to have fun and stay safe, but you are fully responsible for your own safety throughout the event. At the start of your first walk, you'll need to sign a **liability waiver** that covers all Curious Walks you attend. California Blvd., BUT it is accessed from Wilson Ave. **To find the Park entrance** from California Blvd, turn south on Wilson Ave. Proceed \~1 block until Cornell Road is on your right (do *not* turn onto Cornell). Look left, and you will see two signs for Tournament Park and its driveway entrance. The Park is at the end of the long driveway/parking lot. You may park at any of spaces, even if they're marked for Caltech permits; all are free to the public during weekends. We will meet near the bathrooms at the granite plaque commemorating the terminus of the first transcontinental flight. **More Info** Walks will be on Saturday or Sunday mornings on most weekends. Mt Kilimanjaro Trek! One of the 7 Summits. Join us on this bucket list adventure

**Our Meetup is off to another hiking adventure! Mt Kilimanjaro, as the tallest mountain in Africa, is included in the 7 Summits of the world.** **It is a bucket-list item for all hard-core hikers and mountain lovers.** We did this trek with Meetup in the summer of 2024 and it was a true experience of a lifetime (see photos below) Let's get to some numbers. It is 5,895m/19,340ft BUT . . . our starting elevation for the trek is 3795m/12541ft As such elevation gain is 2100m/6799ft To compare Everest Base Camp trek, is about 2754m/9035ft elevation change. And Mt Whitney is about 1828m/6000ft elevation change. The key to being able to succeed in this endeavor lays in the route and the support system. We are taking the Lemosho Route via the Northern Circuit. The Northern Circuit route is the longest and newest of the seven established Kilimanjaro routes. It's one of the best routes because it has the best acclimatization profile. This results in one of the highest summit success rates. Add to that stunning views, and comparatively relaxed pace. It is also much less crowded than the other Kilimanjaro routes. As far as our support system: We will be accompanied by experienced guides, porters and cooks. They are certified, ensuring our safety and comfort. Porters will carry our gear. We will have a high ratio of guides to hikers. Our guides will go our pace and support each and everyone of us, regardless of fitness level and pace. In other words...you go your own speed and we all get there safe. More about our trek/trip. As with all our international trips, we picked the best season/time of year to go for weather and wildlife. Lemosho and Northern Circuit is a scenically spectacular and varied route. At the lower elevations it has an abundance of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, eland and lion which come over to forage during dry season. **Each of our trips is personally crafted to offer the best places and best use of time.** *But I don't have the needed gear?!* You don't need much more than the standard trekker's equipment. Thank you for your cooperation. **Active Community Fee Policy** Starting March 9, 2026, attendees are subject to an Active Community Fee of up to $25 per calendar year. For events where this fee applies, $5.00 per event will be charged and credited toward the attendee’s $25.00 annual Active Community Fee until the full $25.00 has been paid for that calendar year. Once an attendee has satisfied the full $25.00 requirement, no additional Active Community Fee will be owed for the remainder of that same calendar year, provided the attendee remains active under the attendance requirement described below. This fee is a condition of continued participation in the community and is intended to support committed, ongoing attendance. Satisfaction of the $25.00 Active Community Fee grants the attendee the privilege of continued participation in eligible events for the remainder of that calendar year, without further Active Community Fee charges, unless that status is later reset under this policy. To remain current under this policy, an attendee must continue attending at least one event within every rolling three-month period after beginning payment toward the Active Community Fee. If an attendee stops attending for more than three months, their progress toward the $25.00 annual requirement resets. In that case, the attendee must begin again at $5.00 per applicable event until the $25.00 requirement is satisfied again. This policy resets with each new calendar year. Regardless of prior participation, all attendees must satisfy the Active Community Fee again in the next calendar year under the same terms. If an attendee is removed, banned, or denied future participation due to misconduct, disrespectful behavior, disruptive conduct, or other policy violations, any amounts previously paid toward the Active Community Fee are non-refundable. Payment of the fee does not create a right to attend and does not guarantee continued access to events.
