This unique scavenger hunt is all about connecting, uncovering history, exploring Grand Central and solving a mystery. Join us for a fun, social adventure at our Grand Central Murder Mystery Scavenger Hunt. Get ready to have a good time making new friends and solving a mystery. Plus, you'll find out things about Grand Central you never knew before! How It Works: * **When you arrive we will put you on teams - if you don’t already have one (90% of those attending will not have a team).** * **Each team will be given a list of clues and 75 minutes to head to Grand Central to uncover the mystery of Mary’s demise. The team with the most points wins.** * **Once everyone is back we'll safely socialize where you can share your experiences with the others.** The Theme: Meet Up Mary is a regular on the social circuit in New York. You'd probably know her if you've been out before. She was very personable, friendly and bubbly! Unfortunately Mary met a horrific end at Grand Central and the police need you help to solve her case! Join us for this fun and educational night where you will get to explore every corner of the NYC Landmark in ways that you never have before! (If you have participated in our other Grand Central Hunts no worries as this is a completely different experience) FAQs: **Can I come alone?** Yes about 90% will attend on their own. **What's dress code?** Wear what you had on at work. It's casual and comfortable. **What are the ages?** 21 and over. We'll have a good mix of ages. **How much to attend?** $25 (goes to $35 as event gets closer). **Do I have to buy in advance?** Yes. Space is limited and this will sell out. The fine art of baloney detection

The fine art of baloney detection

Mon, Sep 21, 11:00 PM
From New York City Skeptics – Science & Critical Thinking
4.6

Welcome to “**Skeptic Dinners**,” a series of events facilitated by Prof. [Massimo Pigliucci](https://figsinwintertime.substack.com/), a philosopher and biologist at the City College of New York. The idea is similar to that of the [Ancient Greek symposia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symposium): let’s get a small number of like-minded people together over drinks and food and discuss interesting subjects! *** Three decades ago the astronomer and skeptic Carl Sagan published his famous essay on baloney detection, part of his book [The Demon-Haunted World](https://bookshop.org/a/80309/9780345409461), subtitled "Science as a Candle in the Dark." For this discussion, we revisit Sagan's baloney detection kit and update it a bit on the basis of an article written by Massimo Pigliucci for a recent issue of Skeptical Inquirer. Suggested readings / viewing: \* The Fine Art of Baloney Detection—Sagan’s Essay Three Decades Later (available for [free download as pdf here](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/pegsgii5r4srdtyb3nixh/The-Fine-Art-of-Baloney-Detection-Sagan-s-Essay-Three-Decades-Later-Skeptical-Inquirer.PDF?rlkey=7py4zqz5pck0pwim2u0jzlj64&st=n39grbyp&dl=0)) \*\*\* NOTE: **new location!** Also NOTE: Since these are dinner events at a restaurant, which require reservations, **you are expected to consume some food**. Also please **treat your rsvp seriously** and update it if you decide not to come. If you don’t and we end up with empty seats, **you may be barred from some of the next meeting**. Thanks for understanding!

Do your dates resemble job interviews more than actual chemistry? Sick of dedicating your entire evening to getting to know just one person? Then check out **“Dating Games” Speed Dating!** It’s a lively, modern twist on the classic format. Join us for a one-of-a-kind social experience for NYC singles! Meet new people, win raffle prizes, and connect with other fun, like-minded singles. It’s not only a great way to meet a potential partner—it’s also perfect for finding new friends or even future wingmen/wingwomen. **Suggested age range: 20s, 30s & 40s.** Our warm, welcoming host will get things started before dividing everyone into small groups at various tables. You’ll chat, mingle, and play lighthearted social games with groups of about 4–5 singles. The games are easy, super fun, and designed to help everyone open up and connect. After each round, you’ll rotate tables—just like traditional speed dating—so you'll eventually meet all the singles attending. You’ll also receive a “match sheet,” where you can mark anyone you’d like to speak with again. If they choose you as well, the host will email you each other’s contact information within roughly 24 hours so you can plan a date. Let’s be honest—we’re all tired of endless swiping on apps and meeting people who may not be anything like their profiles. A “Dating Games” Speed Dating night is a far better way to connect because you meet real people *in person* and get a genuine sense of who they are. This is an entirely new, innovative take on speed dating! We appreciate the idea behind traditional speed dating, but it can be tough to keep conversations flowing. That’s why at “Dating Games” events, you’ll have entertaining, easy-to-play games to help break the ice and avoid the typical interview-style awkwardness. We find this format helps people connect more naturally and meaningfully. ### WIN PRIZES! You’ll enjoy an evening full of fresh faces, interactive games, and social fun—no special skills needed, just a little luck! Our friendly host will guide the whole experience and help everyone get acquainted. Throughout the night you’ll play multiple games while getting opportunities to interact with all the singles of the opposite sex. When you win a game, you earn a raffle ticket—giving you chances to win prizes! ### IMPORTANT: THIS IS A PRE-PAY EVENT ONLY Tickets **must** be purchased online in advance—registration at the venue will *not* be available. As the event nears and space becomes limited, the price will increase to $35. *See more upcoming NYC events at [WWW.FRIENDZYEVENTS.COM](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/dating-games-a-fun-twist-on-speed-dating-in-nyc-tickets-1982239058384?aff=oddtdtcreator)* For tickets and information: [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1999731903956](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1999731903956)

**TRAIL WORK will continue rerouting the Hogenauer Trail** (we are making progress!) up the slope and away from recently installed property fences. **Meet At:** Dog Park/ Wildflower Preserve, 11 Bear Lane, Maplewood. From there, we will walk to Crater View on Crest drive and then to the Hogenauer trail work site. (Note: While we normally meet the first Sudnay of each month, this volunteer day was shifted after the Labor Day weekend.) Trail work is physically challenging but very satisfying as we use hand tools to build and repair trails. Participants must be 15+ years. Those younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants **should wear long pants** due to [ticks](https://www.somocon.org/?page_id=193928&fb) and thron bushes and sturdy shoes, and bring gloves (though backup gloves will be available). Tools, water, and a snack will be provided. (Registration is not required though if you sign up on Meetup, it helps us know how many tools to bring.) Only heavy, steady rain cancels.
