WTO/99 is a 2025 archival documentarv edited by lan Bell and Alex Megaro, which draws from a vast amount of archival footage to meticulouslv reconstruct, in chronological order, the events of November 30-December 3. 1999 as anti-globalization protests spring up in Seattle and are met with a powerful police response. The Independent Labor Club is an organization with numerous chapters, all working towards a common goal of strengthening civil social bonds between workers and fostering class independence. This event will begin at 7:00, in the meeting house of the NY Society for Ethical Culture (W. 64th St. at Central Park West; see the map on this page). Then at 9 PM, whoever is eager to have the good times continue to roll will move to another venue (TBA) in the vicinity. Once you are in the NYSEC building, take the stairs or elevator to the 4th floor. We will be located in the room called Ceremonial Hall. After the screening, Matt Johnson will walk us through how the film is an insight into censorship. Most people think of film history as a straight line — movies started out conservative and gradually pushed toward the sex and violence of today's blockbusters. That's not what happened. Early Hollywood talkies were surprisingly bold. Frank depictions of sexuality, violence, and gender norms played out on screen at a moment of real cultural upheaval in America. It was freewheeling, daring, and genuinely revolutionary — until religious authorities, alarmed by what they called "filth" in America's mass media, began pushing back. Hard. The result was a self-imposed Hollywood Code that would reshape what American audiences were allowed to see for decades. Sound familiar? America is currently in the middle of a strikingly similar cultural battle — book bans, library defunding, and political pressure on broadcasters are reshaping what people can access right now. Film historian Matt Johnson traces the arc from Pre-Code Hollywood to the rise of censorship — and makes the case that attempts to silence artistic output almost always produce something more subversive and more clever in return. **Matt Johnson** teaches film theory and history at Franklin and Marshall College, where he is also a Fellow coordinating work in refugee resettlement and the question of welcome. He brings the same intellectual rigor and genuine curiosity to the history of Hollywood that he does to the most pressing questions of our time. Freegan Vegetarian Feast in Staten Island

*Attendees are encouraged to participate in Monday’s trash tour to help rescue food to use for this Freegan Feast.* A FREE vegetarian, mostly vegan, community meal we make together with love, using the food the group rescued on the Trash Tour the night before. We’ll meet new people, reconnect with old friends, tell stories and jokes, and generally unplug from the current pent-up world. Please note that while freegans encompass a diversity of diets, our feasts are vegetarian (and mostly vegan). Arrive at 5:30pm to begin cooking and preparation. Plan on lending a hand in some way even if other commitments prevent you from arriving on time. The *Carnival* was originally an outreach program established by MOMA back in 1969. This exhibition is the artwork of select artists with a historical or current affiliation with the *Carnival*, including educators, students, and staff. The works attest to the longstanding impact of the Carnival's emphasis on creative freedom, experimentation, and communal bonds that have, since its beginning, helped shape the artistic and personal development of its associates. Included are a wide spectrum of artistic practices such as painting, printmaking, and photography, legacy techniques such as quiltmaking and ceramics, and the incorporation of found objects, assemblage, and wearable art. A remnant of this 19th century village exists in the form of St. Mary's Episcopal Church (pictured). We'll uncover the area's history of life-saving milk processing, brewing beer, stroll some of its streets like Old Broadway, check out the evolving Manhattanville Factory District, and visit West Harlem Piers Park, one of Manhattan’s newer riverfront green spaces that also features one of the city's more unique eateries - Baylander Steel Beach, a former aircraft carrier docked on the Hudson River. There's also the south campus of City College and the original Dinosaur Barbeque After an approximately 2 hour guided walk we’ll land at West Harlem Pier's Park which is not far from our starting point at 125th Street. The Battle of Brooklyn Tour! Honoring a Pivotal Episode of History

RSVP's begin on Tuesday, August 11th at 8pm. **Note that this is a LONG tour so please be fit to walk a good 5-6 miles in potentially very warm weather.** **To Bring**: Lunch and/or snacks, water, a hat for the sun and sunscreen. You will need a ticket for the ferry to Manhattan towards the end of our tour which costs $4.75 (senior discount available), You can purchase it in advance - easiest through the NYC Ferry App on your phone. https://www.ferry.nyc/ticketing-info/ **Tour Purpose**: This tour honors the 250th anniversary of The Battle of Brooklyn which took place from August 27th - 29th, 1776 during the early months of the American Revolution. We visit several battle locations and follow the route taken by the Americans, who ended up being outnumbered by the morre experienced British forecs, This was the first major battle after the July 4th Declaration of Independence (and the largest battle of the entire war). At 11:00 am we'll meet outside the entrance of the library There are restrooms inside. **Neighborhoods:** Park Slope, Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Fulton Ferry, Manhattan's Financial District. . **ITINERARY AND TOUR DESCRIPTION** **11:00am - Meet in front of at the Main Brooklyn Library at Grand Army Plaza. Arrive early to use the restrooms inside the library.** *Note there is a farmer's market going on nearby with a variety of stalls.* **Check your travel route in advance as there are usually subway line changes on the weekends:** https://www.mta.info/tripplanner/results **Itinerary:** From the library we'll head into Prospect Park and walk through the Battle Pass area, noting the historic markers. Leaving the park we'll follow the escape route taken by the American troops down the Porte Road (today's 1st Street) and then will then head to "The Old Stone House," (pictured), originally a Dutch family farm built in 1699. This was the location of a critical delaying action and battle by a brave Maryland regiment that allowed the American army to retreat to the area we call Fulton Ferry (by the Brooklyn Bridge). We will take the NYC Ferry from there over to Wall Street as we recall the dramatic escape across the East River by 9,000 Americans led by Gen. George Washington, an event which preserved the revolution. **Lunch Break:** The Old Stone House lies within a park with plenty of seating and a restroom. To evade the British, thousands of American troops had to cross the Gowanus Creek (today's Gowanus Canal) and then traveled several more miles to the edge of the East River. We'll follow their route passing through Carroll Gardens, Cobble and Brooklyn Heights. Arrriving at Fulton Ferry by the Brooklyn Bridge, we will visit the site of the dramatic and bold escape from the East River across to Manhattan. For the "grand finale" we'll ferry across the East River ourselves and have a toast at the historic Fraunces Tavern at 54 Pearl Street, the very building where General Washington held his celebratory dinner with his officers at the end of the successful revolution on December 4, 1783. Recalling the Battle of Brooklyn gives us the opportunity to traverse some of Brooklyn's most beautiful historic neighborhoods and historic Lower Manhattan. At the tour's end, we will be convenient to the 1, 2,3,4,5,J, R subways. Optional celebratory toast at the historic Fraunces Tavern along with the opportunity to visit the museum.
