The Writing Group – West Village Session

**Itinerary** People are welcome starting at **6 o'clock**, and you can come and meet other writers, enjoy a happy hour, socialize and hang out as you like until 7 when we will start readings. At **7 o'clock** we formally get together as a group to listen to readings from those looking for feedback. * We do not select readers based on order of arrival or a sign-up sheet, so if you have work until late but still want to come and read, you can! * Each reader gets five (5) minutes to read, so please select a section of work which is appropriate for that time limit. * We welcome narrative prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, and scripts (be they for screen or stage), so long as it is writing that you're serious about. * We'll then spend another five (5) minutes in discussion. This is time for the listeners to provide feedback on the reading and discussing the craft in general. We welcome (and encourage) constructive criticism, so long as it is done with respect. This is just as important as the reading, and is done as an open conversation not lead by the reader or the host, so no hand raising required! * We try to get to as many people who want to read as we can, so if there are a lot of attendees we will be very strict on time. * We take a short break at **8 o'clock** . At **9 o'clock** we finish readings and start our formal social hour. Meet new friends, connect with old ones, exchange longer works for review, or just let loose.

This is a non-judgmental, positive and friendly environment where participants can share their writing, meet other writers, and have some time to write in silence. Wednesday Writing

Come relax after your day job by hanging out with some fellow Bushwick writers for some coffee and a group writing session. \*\*NOTE: Tipsy bean opens just for us on Wednesday night. Google says it's closed but it's not!! May not be open until 7pm though, so if it looks closed don't panic\*\*\* We'll write in three highly-focused 25-minute sprints. In between all that, we'll also talk about what we're working on and trade thoughts and tips on writing. It's a great way to shake off some procrastination and find the creative push needed for that writing project you've been putting off. All writers are welcome, as well as first-time members. Come prepared to write with paper & pen or a laptop...and at least an idea of what you'll be writing about.

Wild Garlic Issue Nine Launch: Displacement

Wild Garlic Issue 9 Launch! We are delighted to announce the publication of "Displacement."' We live in a time of collective shifting and transition. As the world around us rearranges itself in real time, it is impossible to read the news, call home, or participate in community without encountering the many faces of displacement. Now is a time when people are forced from their homes, when families are ruptured, and natural disasters are leveling whole towns. Displacement implies a movement that is not planned, abrupt, or is somehow incompatible with the surroundings. And now, for something different . . . One of our members named Elle (who's not on Meetup) has been using a VERY cool/weird space in midtown as her art studio, and she's gotten permission from the owners to let this group use it for an evening. The night before we meet, I'll email all the details to everyone who's on the RSVP list, but here's some stuff that you should be aware of for now: 1. For liability purposes, you'll need to sign a digital waiver before heading upstairs. If you want to see the waiver before I send out the email, get in touch and I'll provide a link. 2. This place is not wheelchair accessible. We'll be meeting on the 4th floor, and while there IS an elevator, using it will require you to pass through a gap that's only 14.5 inches wide. (See what I mean about "funky"?) There's also a staircase with normal dimensions if you prefer to get three flights' worth of exercise. 3. There's no air conditioning, but there'll be a few fans. I would've waited to do this meeting in the fall or winter but Elle might not have it much longer, and it's such an unusual setup that I decided to go for it ASAP. 4. Elle requested that we have a 90-minute writing session, so let's do it! That'll happen from 6pm to 7:30pm. 5. We'll need to clear the space by 11pm sharp. JCW: Poem Meets Monster: Exploring the Monstrous in Poetry with Sean Glatch

“Gee, I’ll bet monsters are interesting.” —Bugs Bunny Monsters reflect our personal and cultural fascinations with what’s Other. As such, poets Othered by society find metaphor and meaning in monstrosity. A monster is an identity that can be both victim and victor, something stitched or dissembled, a creature celebrated and detested—often at the same time. More than anybody, monsters need poetry. In this workshop, poets will study the monster as a cultural entity and think through their own experiences of monstrosity. We will study Othered poets, particularly queer, trans, disabled, and BIPOC poets who dig beneath the surface of identity. Poets we read include sam sax, Kenji C. Liu, Torrin A. Greathouse, Angela Veronica Wong, and other keepers of the monster. You will end this generative workshop with new poem drafts, prompts to inspire future work, and a community of outsiders to support you through your poetic journey.
