Mapping for Equity in NYC Council District 11 with BetaNYC

[REGISTER ON TITO](https://ti.to/betanyc/mapping-for-equity-district11-july2026) BetaNYC will present the Mapping for Equity project and how to create more equitable and accessible mapped spaces. We will show you how we’re mapping parks and public spaces into OpenStreetMap. Through this activity, we are making sure there's equal representation in data while quantifying and mapping our public realm. Together, we will site, count, and map community assets such as street lamps, benches, water fountains, trash cans, and picnic tables. This event will be delivered in English and all ages are welcome to attend (provided that anyone under 18 years old is present with a parent or guardian). We will be moving about the city and on uneven terrain. Plan on wearing appropriate footwear and environmental attire. Is it the duty of the government to educate its citizens? (NEW LOCATION)

**PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW LOCATION (250 W 55th St)** A widespread view is that public education is a political right and a fundamental necessity for a functioning and free society, enabling individuals to make informed decisions, pursue productive careers, and contribute meaningfully to civic life. From this perspective, public education is seen as an investment in the nation’s future, ensuring equality of opportunity and preventing ignorance from undermining democratic self-government. Are these premises true? In this Meetup, I will present an argument that makes the opposite claim: that education, because it is essential, is not properly the role of government but of individuals, parents, and voluntary institutions, i.e. that government control of education necessarily imposes ideological conformity, eliminates competition and innovation, and violates the rights of parents and of those others forced to finance it. Attendees will be encouraged to contest this argument if they disagree with it, as well as present their own arguments in favor of the moral right to, and practical need of, public education. The Laity Doth Protest: the Balance Between Mindfulness and Activism

How do we balance the pursuit of individual, inner transformation with the need for collective, outer transformation? ​ Many philosophical and spiritual traditions have argued that meaningful social change begins with the transformation of the individual–that a more peaceful, compassionate, and attentive society can only emerge from people who have first cultivated those qualities within themselves. ​ Yet others argue that inward practice alone is insufficient, or perhaps unrealistic, to solve the structural problems that plague society. Organized political action, collective pressure, and direct engagement with systems of power are unavoidable in the pursuit of justice. ​In this session, we’ll explore the relationship between mindfulness and activism. To what degree can personal transformation meaningfully contribute to broader social transformation? Where are the strengths and limitations of inward-focused approaches to change?
