StopScamsSF Listen and Learn Workshop

StopScamsSF is the nation's first city-led program dedicated to protecting residents from financial scams. Led by the Treasurer's Office's Economic Justice Center, the initiative is hosting Listen and Learn Sessions to educate the community on the most common scams and tactics scammers use to target residents. During these sessions, participants will have the chance to share their own experiences and feedback — input that helps shape how the city responds to and addresses scams going forward. **Presenter bio:** Mandy Ngu, Community Engagement Specialist. Mandy serves as the Community Engagement Specialist for the Office of Financial Empowerment. She previously worked in the Mayor's Office, where she partnered with community leaders and nonprofit organizations to host cultural celebrations and strengthen connections between local government and San Francisco's diverse communities. She later joined the Department of Public Health's communications team, supporting leadership messaging, media events, and internal communications. Mandy earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from San José State University. IN-PERSON Podcast Club Meeting in SF: A Challenging Portrait of America

THE LOCATION OF THIS EVENT WILL BE PROVIDED TO ATTENDEES ONLY.** In 2023, the lives of two young men collided tragically in a New York City subway car. Those men were Jordan Neely, a black homeless man who, in better days, was a Michael Jackson impersonator, and Daniel Penny, a white, former-Marine who served his country for four years. In a short subway ride, Neely began threatening and intimidating passengers, prompting Penny to overtake him. A little over six minutes later, Neely was dead. The story became national news, with Americans quickly taking sides on two very different perspectives of justice. This fatal encounter and its aftermath are the subject of a new book, *Man in the Mirror: Hope, Struggling, and Belonging in an American City,* by award-winning reporter and bestselling author Anand Giridharadas. Beyond simply chronicling the nuts and bolts of the tragedy, he offers that everything that put it into motion and what followed are sobering and broad reflections of today's America and its culture and society. Simple, polarized, knee-jerk narratives belie the many deeply-complicated issues we all need to address about ourselves and our country. Referencing the Michael Jackson song, Giridharadas wants us to take a look at ourselves -- the Man in the Mirror. Giridharadas' book is the topic of this week's podcast, *Why Is This Happening? The Chris Hayes Podcast*, and he is the podcast guest. Giridharadas is the author of five books, including *New York Times* bestsellers and international bestsellers. He was a foreign correspondent and columnist for *The New York Times* for over a decade, has written for *The New Yorker, The Atlantic*, and *Time,* and is the publisher of the newsletter [The.Ink](http://the.ink/). This workshop will cover basic banking account options, how to search for unclaimed assets, strategies for preventing fraud and steps you can take to protect and ensure access to your funds in the event of financial emergencies. Participants will also learn about local resources for financial coaching, planning and building confidence with banking and money management. About the Presenter: Erick Tenorio is the Bay Area Regional Manager with Self Help Federal Credit Union and Executive Director of RAICES, a financial capability organization based out of San Francisco. Erick brings more than 25 years in the financial services industry and in the financial capability field, working closely with youth serving and community-based organizations throughout the Bay Area. Erick's workshops center on bringing awareness and resources to address the financial inequities impacting the economic wellness and mobility for many in our communities. Chuang Tzu on Knowledge, Skill, and Letting Go

For this session we’ll read chapters 2, 3, 6, 18, and 19 of Burton Watson’s translation of *The Complete Works of Chuang Tzu* (also known as the *Zhuangzi*). Together, they ask what it means to live well when our judgments about what is right, useful, or worth pursuing may be less secure than we think. Chapter 2 questions whether any one perspective can settle a disagreement and ends with Chuang Tzu’s famous butterfly dream. In chapter 3, Cook Ting’s effortless way of cutting up an ox offers a surprising picture of skill: he succeeds by working with what is there rather than forcing his way through it. Chapters 6 and 18 take that attitude into harder territory—illness, grief, death, and the search for happiness. Chapter 19 returns to skill and asks what it might mean to “master” life without trying to control everything in it. Is Chuang Tzu asking us to give up on truth, or to hold our convictions more lightly? Can we accept change without becoming passive? Online Spanish Bilingual SF Toastmasters Weekly Meeting

During the Shelter in Place, we will be celebrating meetings through Zoom. You can submit your request to attend here or on our website. Join us every Thursday for this unique Toastmasters meeting in two languages! Every meeting is two meetings in one: an English segment, followed by a Spanish segment. Each segment is approximately 30-45 minutes, or 90 minutes total, adjourning promptly at 8:00pm.
