From Memento Mori in NYC - The art of Japanese Life and Death

**What if thinking about death could help us live better?** Join us in New York City for a unique two-day cultural event exploring life, death, and the art of living through Japanese traditions, contemporary art, and cross-cultural conversations. Inspired by *Memento Mori* — the reminder that life is finite — this event invites us to look at death not as a taboo, but as an opportunity to celebrate life, deepen our connections, and discover what truly matters. ✨ **What to Expect** * **Art & Exhibition:** Discover Japanese perspectives on life, death, and remembrance through art. * **Talks & Conversations:** Explore how different cultures approach death, grief, and the meaning of life. * **Hands-on Workshops:** Experience Japanese traditions and creative practices, including calligraphy and mizuhiki crafts. * **Unique Experiences:** Step inside a Japanese coffin, experience meditation, and explore new ways of thinking about mortality. * **Community & Connection:** Meet curious minds, artists, death-care professionals, and people who believe that conversations about death belong in everyday life. Whether you're interested in Japanese culture, art, spirituality, wellness, or simply exploring life's big questions, you'll find a welcoming space to connect, reflect, and share ideas. You don't need to be an expert or have all the answers. Just bring your curiosity and an open mind. **📅 November 5–6, 2026** 📍 RESOBOX East Village, New York City Come curious. Leave inspired to live. 🎟️ **Ready to join us?** Explore the full program, discover special workshops, and get your tickets here: 👉 **Official Website:** [https://mementomori-nyc.com/](https://mementomori-nyc.com/) Come curious. Making Belonging: Story, Design & Social Practice

Making Belonging: Story, Design & Social Practice

Mon, Oct 19, 11:00 PM
From Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab
4.7

What does it mean to make a place where people feel they belong? And what changes when we make it together? Join us for an evening of experimentation as students from Columbia University share a series of prototypes exploring belonging. Through story, design, play, and participation, we'll look at social practice as an act of co-creation, making things with people rather than simply for them. The evening will move between prototypes, conversation, and collective experimentation, asking how the spaces we create—physical, digital, or somewhere in between can invite connection, agency, and a sense of belonging. We'll be joined by **Romy Nehme**, an experience and strategy designer, writer, and member of the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab whose work sits at the intersection of storytelling, imagination, design, and systems change. Romy helped launch New_ Public, bringing a placemaking ethos to the design of digital spaces, and through her practice Beautiful Seams explores how narrative and experience design can help people imagine and shape different futures. Beautiful Seams. Come ready to experience, experiment, and make something together.
