"THE FORGOTTEN" TOUR
Sat, Jun 13, 12:30 PM**1st** **Pennhurst State School** Enjoy a guided Daytime History Tour of the infamous **Pennhurst State School** Campus. Professional Pennhurst Historians will be available to answer your questions as they escort groups on this walking tour. Pennhurst's story echoes that of many of the asylums and institutions. Built in 1908 with high hopes and a sprawling campus that had everything a community could need - including a barber shop, a greenhouse, a fire station, a movie theater, and a general store - Pennhurst rapidly devolved into a site synonymous with well documented overcrowding and neglect that caused the adults and children who resided there to regress further and further from functionality. Pictures welcome! Limited space on this Tour **2nd The Historic Site Eastern State Prison** Experience –Eastern State Penitentiary, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the most iconic prisons in American history. Built in 1829, the prison was revolutionary for its time, promoting the concept of solitary confinement as a method of rehabilitation rather than punishment. Known for its striking Gothic architecture, it once held some of the most notorious criminals in history, including mobster Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. The penitentiary operated until 1971, and today it serves as a museum that sheds light on the legacy of prison reform and mass incarceration in the United States. **3rd Lunch>Reading Terminal Market-** The Reading Terminal Market is a must-see for anyone in Philadelphia- 80+ merchants’ food. This Market has Great food and is fun! DEPARTS SATURDAY JUNE 14th @ 8:30am from Whole Food PRICE TBA !

Exploring the Gilded Age Mansions of Carnegie Hill
Sat, Jun 6, 6:30 PMTickets: $39.98 ( incl. $4.98 fees ) (advance registration required) Click the link below to register for this event: [https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1985456592114](https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1985456592114) When American steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie purchased a swath of property on Fifth Avenue at 90th Street at the turn of the 20th century, he raised many eyebrows across High Society — after all, that part of Manhattan was considered the boonies, too far uptown from the acceptable social center. But Carnegie's foresight eventually won out as other influential Americans soon followed with homes of their own. From the Carnegies, Whitneys, and Vanderbilts to the Posts, Huntingtons, and Rockefellers, it's time to uncover some of Fifth Avenue's turn-of-the-century mansions belonging to some of America's most powerful families of the early 20th century. Join [New York Adventure Club](http://www.nyadventureclub.com "http://www.nyadventureclub.com") as we hit the streets and explore the Manhattan neighborhood of Carnegie Hill, best known for its wide range of historic homes and cultural institutions along Fifth Avenue between 86th and 98th Streets. Led by NYC tour guide, Ginny Poleman, our curated path through New York’s most exclusive neighborhood dating back over a century will include: * A **then-and-now comparison of the neighborhood** using maps, illustrations, and vintage photos dating back to the 19th century * A **walk past world-class museums**, including the Neue Galerie and the Jewish Museum, which were once private mansions * **Insider stories surrounding some of Fifth Avenue’s most notable families**, including why Andrew Carnegie purchased up property around him; why Grace Vanderbilt moved uptown to the “gardener’s cottage”; and how banker Felix Warburg’s father-in-law wasn’t too happy with his gothic chateau-esque mansion * A **look at Beaux Arts architecture** that defined the era that tied into the aesthetic of New York during the City Beautiful Movement * A discussion of **the architects who built the great mansions and museums along Fifth Avenue** and beyond, such as Stanford White, CPH Gilbert, the team of Carrère & Hastings See you there! \*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking! \*\*This tour concludes at Fifth Avenue and 94th Street **About Ginny** Ginny Poleman is a graduate of Cornell University, a licensed NYC tour guide, docent for the Municipal Art Society, as well as an educational and costume collection guide for New York’s largest art museum. Sunset Tour-Unlock the Secrets of the Lower Manhattan Waterfront
Sat, Jun 20, 8:30 PMThis will be a fun and interesting event. This event has NOT been announced yet to all members but you can RSVP now. I use capital letters to emphasize stuff not to shout at you! The description of this event and how we do things is so long, I sometimes forget what I wrote. Humor me and keep reading. PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS EVENT CAREFULLY AS WELL AS "WHAT WE'RE ABOUT" ON THIS MEETUP'S HOME PAGE BEFORE YOU RSVP IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. I am asking you to please take your RSVP seriously. That does NOT mean you have to go -it means you PLAN to at this time. I just ask that all attendees be considerate with respect to the RSVP process. WE ARE LOOKING TO ADD SOME FIRST TIMERS. DO NOT RUSH THE RSVP PROCESS. WE CAN USUALLY MAKE ROOM FOR YOU IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT ATTENDING. IF YOU RSVP AND HAVE NEVER ATTENDED AN EVENT BEFORE WITH THIS GROUP, YOUR E-MAIL IS REQUIRED AS SPECIFIED BELOW WHETHER YOU ARE ON THE WAIT LIST OR THE GOING LIST. A MONETARY CASH CONTRIBUTION TO THE EVENT IS REQUIRED BUT THE AMOUNT OF THAT CONTRIBUTION IS UP TO YOU. (See details below.) There is even a money back guarantee. Most of the events we conduct are free! IF YOU HAVE NEVER ATTENDED AN EVENT BEFORE WITH THE GROUP, I AM ASKING FOR YOUR HELP AND COOPERATION AS I PLAN THE EVENT. I AM REQUIRING THAT YOU SEND ME AN E-MAIL TO [bsb2@att.net](http://bsb2@att.net/) AS SOON AS YOU RSVP, EVEN IF YOU ARE ON THE WAIT LIST, AND PUT YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE TO ME. THIS WILL HELP ME COMMUNICATE MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH THOSE WHO RSVP. SOMETIMES MEETUP MESSAGES DO NOT GET DELIVERED FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. IF YOU CAN'T ABIDE BY THIS SIMPLE REQUEST, YOU ARE GOING TO END UP ON THE NOT GOING LIST. (NO GUESTS UNLESS YOU HAVE ATTENDED AN EVENT BEFORE WITH THIS GROUP. YOU CAN ALWAYS HAVE YOUR GUEST SIGN UP JUST AS YOU DID IF YOU HAVE NEVER ATTENDED AN EVENT BEFORE WITH THIS GROUP.) The wait list for this group does NOT operate in a conventional way. Those on the wait list will NOT be moved to the going list automatically. I do NOT believe that the Meetup waitlist works well for a number of reasons. IF APPLICABLE, ALWAYS JOIN THE WAIT LIST WITH LOW PRIORITY WHICH IS FREE. IF THERE IS A WAITLIST, IT APPEARS MEETUP WILL ASK YOU IF YOU WANT TO JOIN MEETUP + BUT IN SMALLER LETTERS AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE YOU CAN CLICK CONTINUE WITH THE FREE PLAN. There is NEVER a need to pay extra to use Meetup's High Priority wait list classification for this group. ON THIS EVENT, WE WILL REQUIRE A MONETARY CONTRIBUTION - CASH-AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EVENT BUT THE AMOUNT OF THAT CONTRIBUTION IS ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. THERE IS ALWAYS A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE IF YOU FEEL I HAVE NOT EARNED YOUR CONTRIBUTION. Meetup charges an Organizer like me to run the group, it's not a fortune, although the amount was raised substantially and I spend much time and effort planning and preparing for an event. You can contribute whatever you want at the BEGINNING of an event IN CASH. (On most events, I will NOT accept any monetary contributions). PLEASE ALSO READ "WHAT WE'RE ABOUT" ON THIS MEETUP'S HOME PAGE WHICH INCLUDES THE WAIVER OF LIABILITY BEFORE YOU RSVP IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. (THE WAIVER OF LIABILITY HAS BEEN POSTED SINCE THE INCEPTION OF THIS MEETUP GROUP) I bet you thought I forgot the description of the event! I didn't-I just wanted to make sure you understand how we do things so you are comfortable with that. WE HAVE DONE A VERSION OF THIS EVENT AROUND THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER FOR YEARS. This is one of my favorite events to conduct. WE ARE GOING TO DO THIS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENTLY THIS TIME. Join us on a 5 mile fun but fast paced tour that I like to annually do close to the first day of summer. There are a lot of unique parks and truly haunting memorials in this area as well as some sites of historical interest. Years ago, I have led a variation of this hike a number of times for Open House New York which is a city-wide event. This event will be much better. When we move, we will go at a relatively fast pace but I will stop very briefly a number of times to talk about what we see. (We even plan on visiting a couple of luxury hotels where I will instruct you and we will briefly practice how to enter their lobbies in order to blend in with the guests!) We are going to end around 8:30 p.m or so not far from the Fulton Transit Hub in Manhattan where there are connections to PATH and quick subway connections to Grand Central and Penn Station and basically everywhere else in the city. There will be plenty of surprises along the way. You can always leave any time. (Photo by Dean) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO, ON YOUR DESKTOP, PLEASE CLICK ON YOUR PROFILE WHICH IS ON THE TOP RIGHT OF THE SITE, THEN CLICK "SETTINGS", THEN CLICK E-MAIL UPDATES" ON THE LEFT. MAKE SURE YOUR E-MAIL UPDATES ARE ON AND WHERE IT SAYS "UPDATES ABOUT YOU”, CHECK MESSAGES BOX. THIS WILL HELP TO INSURE YOU GET MESSAGES FROM ME. I LIKE TO THINK THOSE MESSAGES ARE IMPORTANT. WE WILL BEGIN A BIT BEFORE 4:30 P.M. BE READY TO GO. WE WILL STOP FOR A BRIEF DINNER BREAK. PLEASE BRING DINNER AND WATER. THIS GROUP NEVER SHOPS FOR FOOD ON AN EVENT. I am going to ask that people not post any comments or questions prior to the event. (Please just respect my wishes and just don't do it.) You have more than enough information to do this once you get the meeting details. No offense, but I don’t need to know-and neither does anyone else- what you are doing that day if you can’t make it or what you think the weather will be. It's even possible you THINK you may have some deep insights to something or other but please keep that deepness to yourself. AFTER the event, post as many comments and photos as you like. If the weather forecast is really bad, I will post a notice on the day of the event by 1:00 P.M. If there is no notice, we go.

Exploring the Fifth Avenue Gilded Age Mansions
Sat, Jun 6, 3:00 PMTickets: $39.98 ( incl. $4.98 fees ) (advance registration required) Click the link below to officially register for this experience: [https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1988965711986](https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1988965711986) When New York City's wealthiest residents moved uptown to escape the crowded downtown neighborhoods beginning in the late 19th century, they didn't just build big homes, but rather colossal palaces. From architectural details that included turrets, gargoyles, moats, and wrought iron inspired by Italian Renaissance tombs — to prominent American families that included names like Carnegie, Pulitzer, Vanderbilt, and Frick — it's time to travel up Fifth Avenue and uncover the incredible sights and stories behind the Gilded Age mansions that still line the avenue. Join [New York Adventure Club](http://www.nyadventureclub.com) as we hit the streets and explore the great Gilded Age Mansions of Museum Mile. Spanning along the Upper East Side's stretch of Fifth Avenue, Museum Mile got its name from the high density of world-class museums and cultural institutions that were built thanks to very wealthy benefactors during the Gilded Age — many whose great mansions still stand across Central Park. Led by NYC tour guide, Ginny Poleman, our curated path through New York’s most exclusive neighborhood dating back over a century will include: * A **then-and-now comparison of the neighborhood** using maps, illustrations, and vintage photos dating back to the 19th century * **A walk by museums that make up Museum Mile**, which include the Guggenheim, MET, and Cooper Hewitt * **Insider stories surrounding some of Museum Mile's most notable families**, including why Joseph Pulitzer had architect Stanford White soundproof his bedroom, how Andrew Carnegie was so wealthy that he could choose his neighbors, and why Henry Clay Frick wanted his home to become a world class private museum after he passed away * A trip past Cook Block and explanation as to why it's **today’s best example of early 20th century architecture** * A **look at Beaux Arts architecture that defined the era** that tied into the aesthetic of New York during the City Beautiful Movement * A **discussion of the architects** who built the great mansions and museums along Fifth Avenue and beyond, such as Stanford White, Whitney Warren, CPH Gilbert, and the team of Carrère & Hastings See you there! \*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking! \*\*This tour does not go inside any of the mansions \*\*\*This tour concludes at Cooper Hewitt at 91st Street & 5th Avenue Disclaimer Event takes place rain or shine.
