Day trip by coach - Coastal hike, three towns & mini steam train! (NOW FULL)

Come along on Saturday 26th September to visit the Kent coast for a 5 mile hike, visit three towns and ride the mini steam train! **About the day** We will be heading to the Kent coast to the town of Hythe, then walk 5 miles along the coast to Dymchurch, before catching the mini steam train to Dungeness. We will be able to spend some time in all three towns. **Hythe** Hythe is an old market town with both medieval and Georgian buildings, as well as a Saxon/Norman church on the hill. Its seafront is mainly Victorian. It offers stunning views across Southampton Water and is known for its historic pier. We will then walk 5 miles along the coast to Dymchurch (alternatively, you can catch a local bus number 102 to Dymchurch). **Dymchurch** Dymchurch sits at the very edge of the Romney Marshes and played a vital role in defending the coastline, with the Martello Towers and Dymchurch Wall forming part of the Napoleonic sea defences. It has a sand and shingle beach. **Mini Steam Train** From Dymchurch, we will then get the mini steam train to Dungeness. Opening in 1927, the track runs parallel to the coast on a gauge of 15 inches (380 mm). **Dungeness** Dungeness is a unique headland on the coast of Kent, famous as Britain's only desert due to its vast, windswept shingle landscape. It has a collection of old fishing houses and their boats are still visible on the shingle. It's Sunrise Season again :-) Watch the sunrise in the company of other people who are up for tiny adventures. Warm up and carry on conversations in a nearby cafe afterwards. (Conversations fuelled by early morning light and coffee tend to be good ones.) **The plan:** * meet at 7AM at the top of **PRIMROSE HILL** * sunrise is at 7:05AM * take in the view for a little while (depending on how cold it is) * walk to a local café on Regents Park Road * warm up with coffee We meet frequently to create and sustain community. Day trip to Brighton

Brighton is one of the most popular seaside towns in England. It is one of the closest to London with very good train links into Victoria & London Bridge Stations. You will be able to enjoy the beach with all the usual attractions of a seaside town, as well as a Sea Life Centre and very attractive shopping area called “The Lanes”. There is one landmark that stands out in the city and that is the Royal Pavilion, the royal palace built for King George IV when he was Prince of Wales. The design has influences of Indian architecture, which gives it an unusual oriental appearance. We begin our tour at London Bridge station at the lower level ticket office. When we get to Brighton, there will be a guided tour around the city, which will finish at the Royal Pavilion. You will then have free time until we meet to come back to London. The price you pay for the tour includes the train ticket, a guided walk and entry to the Royal Pavilion.

Come along on Saturday 10th October for a coach trip to visit some pretty towns in north Dorset! **About the day** The county of Dorset sits in South West England. It's known for its chalk uplands, its stunning countryside and its postcard perfect towns & villages built in local stone. We will be visiting three small and pretty towns in north Dorset: **Blandford Forum** Blandford Forum is a market town on the River Stour. It is notable for its Georgian architecture, the result of rebuilding after a major fire in 1731 and today its considered the most complete Georgian town in England. Its also home to the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery, detailing the counties history and you also get access to the remains of a Roman town house next door. **Sturminster Newton** Sturminster Newton is a pretty town which also sits on the River Stour and is set in a large dairy agricultural region. It has links with the novelist Thomas Hardy, when he lived in the town for 2 years and the town has a mixture of medieval, 18th and 19th century buildings. It also has a museum about the history of the town. **Shaftesbury** Shaftesbury is an ancient hilltop market town famous for the steep cobbled street Gold Hill, which was featured in the classic 1970s Hovis bread TV advert. Petersfield, secluded valleys & dramatic 360 views from Harting Down

**WHAT TO EXPECT - Dramatic hill-top views, secluded valleys and woodland** Distance: **25km (approx 15 miles)** Ascent: c. **570m** Estimated Duration (approx): **6 hours walking** (4km/hr) Difficulty: Moderate to energetic Group size: 20 hikers **HIGHLIGHT** * An undulating hike through the little known western reaches of the South Downs. * Lovely quaint pub for a stop at lunchtime * Stunning 360-degree panoramic views on top of National Trust's Harting Down * Significant views out to the Solent and the Isle of Wight * Deer parks in the later part of the walk * Some beautiful quintessentially English countryside at its best **DESCRIPTION** We'll be walking in part on the South Downs Way, as well as lesser known paths steeped in history. Our day will start in Petersfield - an ancient market town founded in the early 12th century which became a horse coaching centre on the main London to Portsmouth route. We'll then head to Buriton, a lovely historic village just south of Peterfield. From there we will start heading up onto the South Downs Way and then down to South Harting, which sits at the foot of the beautiful South Downs. It is home to one of the major landmarks in the Rother Valley - St Mary and Gabriel Church. This will be our lunch stop at a quaint old pub. We'll be walking off our lunch with a steep climb up onto Harting Down - a stunning 360-degree viewpoint where the higher ground of West Harting Down provides significant views out to the Solent and the Isle of Wight should we have fine weather. A truly wonderful 9.5 mile walk in the glorious beautiful Kent countryside. There may be some stiles and a few hills so you have been warned ! Using our Oyster Cards we shall take the train at 10.40am that arrives at Knockholt at 11.20am so please arrive by 10.25am. Or you may decide to drive. The walk shall commence by 11.25am.
