West Wittering is most famous for its sandy beach, and as popular a seaside venue as any within reach of the capital, with everything a visitor can hope for 😎🏖️ 82 years ago, this place was absolutely teeming - however the circumstances then were very different. On the anniversary of the momentous events that began from these shores in 1944, this walk heads to Wittering's memorial. East Head is only a stone's throw from the popular beach; yet must be walked to, which means the unspoiled dunes will be ours. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/sussex/east-head If Wittering's beach proves too delightful for some, there is a bus that one can catch back to Chichester when the day is done. A couple of options for the return walk. Depending on numbers and logistics, the optimum would be via Bosham's historic harbour. It was from here in 1064 that Harold Godwinson sailed to Normandy, invoking a chain of events destined to culminate two years later. From Harold to Eisenhower, history resonates through these sands. TRAVEL 1\. Take the 9\.05 train from London Victoria to CHICHESTER\. CHEAPEST TRAIN TICKETS - £13.00 PER PERSON RETURN: By far the cheapest train fare is to purchase a Group DaySave which allows unlimited travel on Southern trains and for a group of four (£52) is £13 each. It is also possible to buy this ticket for two (cheaper) or three people. NB the ticket must be purchased at least three days before travel from Southern's website. The link is: [Buy DaySave Train Ticket | DaySave Train Ticket | Southern Railway](https://www.southernrailway.com/discounts-and-offers/daysave) Feel free to use this event page or the event chat to find fellow travellers for DaySave tickets Alternatively, an off peak day return ticket purchased on the day to CHICHESTER is £26.70 with a Network card or Groupsave which will cover all travel. WALK DETAILS Walk starts 10.40 AM from CHICHESTER station. Circular walk The 8 miles walk involves a Service 52 bus back to Chichester from West Wittering. "*The experiments I am about to relate may be repeated with great ease, whenever the sun shines."* North Downs nature from Zone 6! On Thomas Young's birthday in 1773, this walk links places connected with two great intellects. Armed with a piece of board into which he cut a couple of slits, in 1803 Thomas Young proved for the first time that light travels in waves. A year later he was developing a theory of capillary phenomena and surface tension. Also defined the term 'energy'. When not expanding knowledge of physics, there was time to decipher the Rosetta Stone and define as a group the Indo-European languages. Thomas ended up at Farnborough in Kent, whose church sits on the edge of open countryside, invisible to the metropolis that lurks behind. Along the way we'll lunch at Downe, home of Charles Darwin. On the anniversary of his last work in 1906, a walk exploring the bucolic landscape inhabited by the painter John Clayton Adams. A significant development in John Clayton Adams's life and art occurred in 1873 when he moved to Brackenhurst, a residence overlooking the village of Ewhurst. There will be time to pause in Ewhurst. Look out for the church's early 12th-C south door, which Pesvner records as the best Norman example in Surrey. Behind the altar would be added a reminder of much forgotten events around Russia's Don river, 15 years after Adams's time. Then we head further into the painter's landscape, and higher, for he painted "Summer in the Surrey Hills". And there stands Hurt Wood Mill, Grade 2 listed and dating from 1845. His other works include "The Evening Sun" and "Flowers of the Field". Let's hope for both. Outward Travel: Take the train departing 9:41 AM from London Victoria to OCKLEY. Beforehand from 9.20 AM the organizer will be easy to spot next to the WH Smith in the centre of the station, wearing a bright yellow shirt or coat. Buy an off peak day return to OCKLEY - £12.05 with a Network card or Groupsave. Walk start: 10:51 AM from Ockley rail station. Bring a packed lunch. Village stops. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. Seven sisters spectacular coastal hike, ending in picturesque East Dean

From GO London Hiking

**This is a challenging hike with several options to shorten if needed.** Hike the Seven Sisters, the Chalk Cliffs of Sussex, one of the most scenic coastal regions in the south downs of England. **GRADE:** Intermediate / Challenging 23 km 13 miles 670m of ascent and approx 7 hrs hiking time without breaks. This is a spectacular coastal hike with breathtaking views of the dramatic chalk sea cliffs on the English Channel coast in south-east England, ending in East Dean, a beautiful South Downs village close to Beachy Head and Birlig Gap beach, where Sherlock Holmes went to retire! The name "Seven sisters", according to a legend, comes from seven sisters who lived on these limestone formations, each of them had a house between these hills. In fact there are now eight cliffs as an extra one has been created by coastal erosion. Starting in the pretty town of Seaford on the Sussex coast we follow the coastal path passing the Martello Tower and follow the Vanguard way to Seaford Head. We undulate along the sea cliffs to drop down to the Cuckmere Estuary and wildlife reserve, stopping for lunch at the cafe and visitor centre. Later we join the South Downs Way and enter the Seven Sisters Country Park where a steep climb leads us to the trig point at Cliff End. From here we follow the cliff edge path over the Seven Sisters cliff to Birlig Gap. After Birlig Gap there is a steady climb past Belle Tout, a former lighthouse, and onto the spectacular Beachy Head with possibly the finest views in Southern England. We then make our way inland towards East Dean picturesque village where we can finish our hike in a delightful old smugglers pub, before making our way back home! From East Dean we can take the bus, the Coaster 12/12A/12X service from East Dean Bus Shelter to Eastbourne. These buses are very frequent and operate up to every 10 minutes. Details can be found here: [Coaster 12X - Eastbourne - Brighton | Brighton & Hove Buses](https://www.buses.co.uk/services/BH/12X#disruptions). Journey time: 22 min and cost: approx £3. This unusual sand-based terrain is characteristic of the Surrey Hills and offers striking contrasts of colour and texture as we ascend towards our first landmark. Reaching the iconic **Devil’s Punch Bowl**, we pause to take in sweeping views over this vast natural amphitheatre. Folklore tells how the Devil himself scooped out the hollow during a quarrel with Thor, leaving behind this dramatic scar in the Surrey landscape. The Punch Bowl has long inspired writers and artists, including Dickens and Agatha Christie, drawn by its atmospheric setting. From here the trail climbs to **Gibbet Hill**, at 272 metres the second-highest point in Surrey. Once used as a site of execution, its grisly past lingers in local tales. Today, a **Celtic Cross** stands here, erected to dispel superstition. On clear days, the summit rewards us with views stretching across the Weald and even to London’s skyline in the far distance. Nearby lies the **Sailor’s Stone**, a memorial to an 18th-century sailor murdered on the heath, whose story adds a haunting note to our journey. Our return route follows peaceful tracks through **Hindhead Common**, a landscape of open heath and wooded valleys rich in wildlife. We finish back in **Haslemere**, completing a circular walk that combines folklore, literary inspiration and the rugged natural beauty of the Surrey Hills. 🧭 **Guide:** • Leader: [GRAHAM](https://www.outdooraholics.co.uk/MeetTheOutdooraholics.pdf) • Contact (hike day only): 07796 098487 🍽️ **Food:** • Bring a packed lunch • Pub visit after the hike (drinks optional) 🎒**What to Bring** • Hiking boots/shoes • Water (2 litres minimum) • Packed lunch • Waterproofs (jacket and trousers) • Hat and gloves if cold • Train tickets are arranged – just meet us at the meeting point ⚠️ **Safety** Your guide is a trained hike leader and Outdoor Activity First Aider ❓ **Want to Know More?** • [New to Our Trips?](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/new_to_our_day_hikes.pdf) (perfect for first-timers, answers “what to expect”) • [About Us](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/about_us.pdf) (who Outdooraholics are, credibility, history) • [FAQs](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/FAQ.pdf) (covers common queries) 📲 **Explore More &** **Stay Connected** [Day hikes list](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/hikesbygrade.pdf) 👣 [Calendar - All trips](https://www.meetup.com/outdooraholics/events/calendar/) 📖 [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/outdooraholics/) 📸 [Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/Outdooraholics) & [Photos group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/Outdooraholics) 📄 **Terms and Conditions** By signing up or attending you agree to our [Terms and Conditions](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/TermsConditionsOutdooraholicsHikingUK.pdf) © Outdooraholics Hiking UK Ltd 2026 E & OE
