WRITE CLUB: one hour of silent writing (or reading) in the company of others

The first rule of WRITE CLUB is that you do not talk ***during*** WRITE CLUB. This very simple meetup is based on the premise that public and peer accountability enables more productive writing than sitting at home and getting distracted by the fridge. We will write/read for an hour in silence. He said to me that *"when it comes to the philosophy of coffee, it just depends how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go".*.. we went deep! Together we're bringing you three thought experiments paired with coffee tasting (decaf options available). The event will be at Moonstruck Cafe, one of the top 10 coffee shops in London (Best Coffee Guide) and top 20 in the whole of Europe! What better place to explore the philosophy (and taste) of coffee? **Spaces are very limited, so get your ticket early if you want to be there 😊** MORE INFO **The idea:** A chance to meet and talk meaningfully about thought provoking topics. **How we'll do it** (timings approximate): * 6:30pm - Arrive at Moonstruck. * Organise ourselves into small groups (3-4) * Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event) * 6:45 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to pursue tangents and anecdotes. * 7:05 - Reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment. * 7:30 - Reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment. * 7:55 - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups. * 8:00 Meetup ‘ends’. But conversations continue. **Notes on the general atmosphere**: * The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic. * While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough! * Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss. **Where we'll meet**: This group will be at Moonstruck Cafe. In what ways can we benefit from “the Arts”?

NOTE: the pub does not charge for our space on the understanding that we all purchase something from the bar. Please support them. I'll be there from around 7pm if anyone would like a social chat before we get started. **Please arrive in time for a prompt start at 7:30.** We’ll inevitably spend some time exploring what distinguishes “art” from anything else. But most of our discussion will focus on the ways in which art can be beneficial to both the consumer and the creator. We’ll take a fairly broad interpretation of "the arts", including music, literature and other forms of creativity, in addition to the sorts of things you see in art galleries. (Hence my use of “consumer” instead of “viewer”/”listener”/”reader”). Some questions we might consider… * To what extent does “art” need to be pleasing to the consumer? * If not “pleasing”, what else draws people to experience it? * To what extent should art challenge us to think, or see the world differently? How does this vary across different art forms? * In what ways is being creative for its own sake, beneficial? * In what ways is expressing feelings through art a form of therapy? * What distinguishes works produced primarily to benefit the creator from works produced primarily to benefit the consumer? Who judges? On what basis? * “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist” is a quote attributed to Picasso. What did he mean? Was he right? Is “art” a licence to break rules? How healthy is that – for creators and consumers? * Marc Chagall, an early 20C painter said “If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.” To what extent does successful creation and consumption of art rely on an emotional component / a rational component? * To what extent does a consumer need to understand the creator's intent in order to benefit from a work of art? * What effort does the consumer have to make to fully benefit from the art they consume? How does this vary across different art forms? * To what extent is the act of physically going to a gallery/concert/theatre… more beneficial than seeing photos of pictures in a book / listening to music at home / watching a play on TV etc.? * In what ways do the benefits of creating differ from the benefits of consuming?
