Queer-mas Craft Workshop

**Details**: This month we will be decorating Christmas tree ornaments. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to paint and adorn a selection of ornaments to hang on your tree. Create restrained or extravagant seasonal decorations to your taste by using paint or an assortment of embellishments. All materials and tools will be provided. You are not alone! In this fast-paced weekday morning workshop we share the ‘know-how’ of a corded and cordless drill. We’ll show you why the power tool is your friend and give you the confidence to master it in just one session. Identify what any wall is made of and learn how to select the correct combination of drill bit, wall fixing and screw to ensure that your shelves can hold your heavy items, curtains and blinds stay up. Learn to drill into tile and brick without creating a shallow, wide hole and a cloud of dust! Leave with the skills, confidence and know-how to go home and hang those pictures and shelves that have sat on your floor for months, waiting to reach their full potential. All personal protection, tools and materials are included. Suitable for absolute beginners. Enjoyable for everyone.

WOODTURNING – PEPPERMILL

During this one-day woodturning workshop you will learn the ’Headstock method’ ‘Spindle turning,’ accurate drilling, fitting two parts together and decorative tips, to make a Peppermill. Discover the parts of the lathe and understand how to safely secure your work, the methods to use with each chisel and how to sand and finish your projects. You will start by turning a practice piece before moving onto the peppermill, using spindle turning techniques, learning to drill accurately and introducing the use of a woodwork chisel and tenon saw in the process. Making the peppermill will teach you how to make and fit two parts together. By creating a ‘spigot’ on the head of the mill to fit nicely into the body of the Peppermill. Suitable for those who have attended our pen and bowl making workshop however confident beginners are also welcome. INTRO TO UPHOLSTERY – 1 DAY

It doesn’t matter which one you choose to take first. Each technique that is offered is part of all the processes every upholsterer has to learn.* *We supply all tools and materials.* One-day workshop. 10am – 5pm. Join us for a fascinating day of discovery as we delve into the fabulous world of upholstery. A Professional upholsterer will show how to use all the specialist tools to strip out and untack old upholstery and how to recover a simple modern chair seat to transform your tired furniture into raving beauty. One of the modules that professional upholsterers have been examined on is the process of making a modern ‘drop-in’ dining seat. You will learn about foam and how to select the correct density and compression rate. By building up foam and applying the additional layers of calico and polyester, everyone learns how to complete the project by tensioning top and bottoming fabric with confidence. In a professional upholstery company, the apprentice learns by making many drop-in seats before being let loose on more complicated items. We begin the day by learning how to strip out old upholstery. You will learn how to use traditional specialist hand tools to remove staples and tacks from upholstered furniture to prepare for replacing the upholstery. You don’t have to bring a chair to the workshop, as we provide simple wood panels for you to cover and take home, but if you have a tatty covered stool, dining chair or drop-in seat you would like to start work on, we would be happy to show you how to unpick the tacks or staples from it. It is always very enjoyable to see what ‘lies beneath’. It may not be possible to finish recovering your project during the one-day workshop, but we will advise you on the next steps and you will gain confidence to tackle simple jobs by working on the wood panel we provide. At the end of the day, you will have a chance to learn how to web a frame using a hand web stretcher with magnetic hammers and tacks. You can use a fabric of your own, or use one of our selection of upholstery fabrics at the centre. The use of all tools and materials is included. We also have a selection of tools and materials that we use in our workshops for sale at the centre for you to continue your new hobby at home. Beginners welcome. These workshops fill fast! Warning: Upholstery can become addictive.

INTRO TO WOODWORK – 1 DAY – SHELF & BRACKET

This one day workshop is a great introduction if you lack time or commitment to take a longer course. In this safe and friendly workshop, you will learn how to plan your work, where and how to buy suitable wood for use in making simple projects at home. You will use the tools you will need to build a basic kit and the day includes a demonstration on keeping your tools sharp. Using easy to follow directions in this ‘hands on’ practical day, you will learn how to measure and cut accurately, how to use a chisel to make a classic wood joint and how to use to a plane to make your wood smooth. You will drill the holes to glue and screw your work together. Everyone works with a complete set of tools and makes their own project, under the guidance of an experienced tutor. During the day you will make two ‘gallows style’ brackets and attach them with wood plugged screws to a 50cm shelf. This is fitted with simple hardware to hang and display your work.
