This month, we'll be visiting the [Kunstgewerbemuseum](https://www.smb.museum/en/museums-institutions/kunstgewerbemuseum/collection-research/collection/) (Museum of Decorative Arts). "Decorative arts" is a broad term, encompassing furniture, objects, fashion, and interiors. The museum's collection is extremely diverse: from medieval sacred art to Baroque porcelain to twentieth-century fashion. As a person who is happy to stare at a beautifully designed cabinet for twenty minutes, I'm really excited for this one. (I promise I won't make you join me.) No pre-order needed, we'll get tickets at the venue.

**Borsig! – Berlin's Locomotive King by Bike** **Time:** 12:00 - Midday **Start:** Hamburger Bahnhof – Main Entrance **Distance:** 30 km **Suggested contribution:** €5 This week we'll be following the story of **August Borsig**, one of the men who helped turn Berlin into an industrial powerhouse—and the company that became Europe's largest locomotive manufacturer. We'll cycle across Berlin following Borsig's remarkable journey from a small factory outside the old city walls, through the industrial landscape of Moabit, to the enormous works in Tegel. Along the way we'll see how the requirements of heavy industry pushed factories further and further away from the city centre, and how each move created new industrial landscapes, transport connections and workers' housing. We'll finish at the magnificent **Borsigwerke in Tegel**, beneath the famous Borsigturm. **The Tour** We will follow the story of Borsig through **three generations of factories**. We'll begin near the former Borsig works on **Chausseestraße**, where August Borsig established his factory in 1837. Just four years later, the first Borsig locomotive left the works. The company rapidly expanded, becoming one of Europe's leading locomotive manufacturers. But there was a problem: the factory was becoming trapped inside a rapidly growing city. We'll cycle north and west towards **Moabit**, where Borsig began expanding in the 1840s. Here the company established an ironworks, boiler works and machine factory beside the Spree, taking advantage of the waterway and the growing railway network. By the middle of the nineteenth century, much of Borsig's production had moved here. This gives us the opportunity to explore one of the great stories of Berlin's industrial development: **why did factories leave the city centre?** We'll look at the relationship between industry, transport, land prices, workers and the waterways that allowed heavy materials to move around the city. Finally we'll continue north to **Tegel**, where Borsig built a completely new factory from the 1890s onwards. Production began here in 1898, on a huge site designed specifically for modern industrial production. The factory even had its own harbour for bringing in raw materials. Here we'll explore the surviving **Borsigtor, factory halls and Borsigturm**, the extraordinary 65-metre tower built in 1922–24 and Berlin's first office high-rise. We'll then finish by exploring **Borsigwalde**, the workers' settlement created alongside the new factory. Borsig needed thousands of workers, but there wasn't enough housing in Tegel, so the company helped create an entirely new neighbourhood. Its surviving streets provide a fascinating glimpse into the social side of industrialisation. We'll finish with a well-earned beer together in Tegel. I am an accredited tour guide in Berlin, specialising in telling stories about the city's industrial heritage. Anyone with a decent bicycle and experience cycling around Berlin should be comfortable on this route. Join us for intermediate and advanced play on outdoor 2v2 courts. If you are not yet at the intermediate level ([F1+](https://www.esv-muenchen-volleyball.de/niveaueinstufung)) or want to play 3v3/4v4, sign up via [the simultaneous event](https://www.meetup.com/berlin-volley/events/) instead. We play with beach rules: do not use open hands for the first or last touches, do not touch the net, etc. We overbook slightly to ensure we have enough players and to allow individuals to take breaks. After playing, you can join us for socials with drinks and snacks at the bar area. It's recommended that you come 10 minutes early so you have time to change and find the fields. If it is your first time, 15 minutes might be even better. You can join whatever court you like and move between courts during the event. **Let’s Paint Precious Stones!** Ever looked at a crystal or gemstone and thought, *how on earth would I paint that?!* In this watercolour class, we’ll turn our attention to the fascinating world of minerals, crystals, and precious stones—exploring all those beautiful colours, transparent layers, reflections, textures, and unexpected shapes. We’ll learn how to use watercolour to create the illusion of **glowing crystals, polished surfaces and sparkling stones**, playing with transparency, layering, colour mixing and light. And don’t worry — you don’t need to be a geologist or a watercolour pro! #### **The waterworks tour !** #### **Guided bike tour of the water story of Belrin - with a exclusive access to the Ökowerk Nature Conservation Centre Pump Station.** **Time:** 16:00 - depending on start point **Theme:** Cycle Tour + Water Infrastructure + Industrial Heritage + Nature **Distance:** 13 km (with optional loop back to Berlin = 35km). Dear Bike and Hike Group As part of the Festival der Berliner Industriekultur I will be leading a cycle to the Okowerk Pumping station in Grunewald on the 18th September. This amazing old steam pumping station - the oldest \*in-situ steam engine in Berlin - will be opened up just for us and we will get the opportunity to see round one of the first modern water pumping facilities in the city. Beyond this we will visit the Drachenburg to look out over the Havel river and discuss the importance of water transport, purity and filtration in the story of Berlin's growth as a world city. Later we will look at the beautiful Wannsee Strandbad and talk about leisure and water in the Wagner's dream of the garden city in Berlin. We'll spend the day moving between two very different worlds: a curated private tour through a selection of galleries at the Spinnerei — hosted by the gallery's own representatives — and the classical grandeur of the Museum der bildenden Künste, one of Germany's most significant fine art collections, where I'll personally lead a lecture on the collection. Dear Book Enthusiasts, For our September gathering, we’ll be reading ***The House on the Hill*** by the Italian writer **Cesare Pavese**. This atmospheric and deeply introspective novel explores loneliness, desire, memory, and the experience of war. Set in Turin during the final years of the Second World War, it follows Corrado, a solitary teacher who finds himself increasingly drawn into the lives of people around him as the city is transformed by violence and uncertainty.
