**Let's walk 4 miles up the Hudson to happy hour at [Baylander](https://baylander.nyc/), NYC’s smallest aircraft carrier, docked at 125th Street.** *“Baylander started its service life in 1968 as harbor utility craft YFU-79 during the Vietnam War. It was one of 16 Skilak class lighters that were purchased by the US Navy and used to move men and material around the delta regions there. After the war, it was laid up until 1986 when it was converted into a helicopter landing trainer and renamed Baylander HLT after its home port in Pensacola Bay."* **Meeting time/place:** 12:45 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026 at the USS Maine Monument in Central Park across from Columbus Circle. **Route:** Central Park to the river, then we’ll walk north on the Hudson River Greenway to 125th Street, approximately 4 miles. Please use restrooms in Central Park near our meeting place or in Deutsche Bank Center. We'll also make a restroom stop en route. **Bring:** Hat, sunblock, water. Rockaway Beach Walk & Swim

Walk along the Rockaway boardwalk from Beach 116th St. to Beach 57th Street, Arverne, on Saturday, August 15th. Slow pace on flat terrain, about 3.5 miles. Drop-off points with subway access along the walk route. We will have a leisurely lunch and spend time at the beach enjoying the sun, sand, and ocean. After the beach, we will walk back to the subway at Beach 67th St., where the walk will end. If you come by ferry, either wait at the boardwalk on Beach 108th Street or walk to the subway station at Beach 116th Street. Please note: I will not wait for the ferry. BRING: lunch, water, bathing suit, hat, and sunscreen. MEET: 11:00 AM outside the subway station at Beach 116 Street. Take the JFK A-Train to Broad Channel, change for the S-train at Broad Channel or Rockaway Boulevard, and exit the S-train at Beach 116 Street. Please allow ample time to reach Rockaway Beach due to MTA weekend subway service changes. Bathrooms are available in the subway station and nearby on/off boardwalk. Rain cancels, and the walk leader will announce cancellation on Meetup by 8 pm the day before the walk. \*\*Joint walk with Outdoors Club, please RSVP with only one club. Coney Island Shorewalk: Sunset and Fireworks

Join me on a leisurely three mile stroll along the shoreline, all the way to the end of the island for an unobstructed view of the sunset, the lighthouse, and the Verrazano Bridge. The sun sets at 8:12 PM, but the effects are visible much earlier, so we will start walking westward at 7:00. After sunset, we will walk back along the shoreline to the starting point, look for a spot to sit until just before the the fireworks start at 9:45. We will be watching the fireworks from the pier. **Meeting time and place**: Meet at 6:45 PM in the outdoor dining area, next to Nathan's. The walk starts at 7:00 PM. **Getting there**: Take the D, F, N, or Q to the last stop, Coney Island/Stillwell Avenue. Cross the street, and walk on Surf Avenue past Nathan's. The outdoor seating area is next to Nathan's. If you are facing the ocean from Surf Avenue, the seating area will be in front of you and the restrooms alongside Nathan's, to the left of the seating area. **Latecomers**: The sun, alas, does not wait for people. If you are late, cross Surf Avenue when you come out of the subway station, walk left on Stillwell Avenue all the way toward the boardwalk, where you can use the restrooms. Then get down from the boardwalk onto the sand, walk under the pier, and look for a group of people with backpacks. We will be walking westward, in the direction of the setting sun. The crowds thin out after the pier, so you shoud be able to catch up with us. **Bring** food, drinks, and a light jacket as the temperatures tend to drop after sunset. If you need to purchase dinner or snacks, please come early as we will be starting on time. You can also pick up dinner and/or stop for drinks once we get back to the starting point after watching the sunset. **Footwear:** Wear shoes appropriate for walking on the sand. The water is warm enough for people to walk or wade barefoot . We will be walking along the shoreline, and not on the boardwalk. **Group dynamics**: Please note that we will be walking as a group to see the sunset and then back to the pier area. Between the end of the walk and the start of the fireworks at 9:45, you can purchase food and beverages, explore the area, go for another walk, sit down if you so desire, before joining us on the pier. **This is a leisurely walk; leader sets the pace**. **Coney Island**: I will talk briefly about the geology and history of Coney Island before we start walking, and then give you an overview of Seagate when we stop to look at the sunset. We will be watching the sunset along with the locals at a location unfrequented by tourists. **Note**: If you'd like to come earlier to enjoy the rides and restaurants, check the [Luna Park website](https://lunaparknyc.com) for the necessary information. **Guests** are welcome; please have them sign the [waiver and release via this link](https://tinyurl.com/28cez6j8) to participate. Volunteer sea kayak rescue training - INTERMEDIATE

**\*\*\*Weather and water quality dependent: event is subject to be changed or moved depending on conditions leading up to training\*\*\*** Our program is run entirely by volunteers, so please be kind and understanding! We take time out of our own schedules to do this. Please sign up for up to one training per week. Let others have fun! The host will move you to "Not going" if you sign up for more than one training per week. When you sign up, you'll be placed on a waitlist until the host makes sure you meet the qualifications. **Rescue Training** Join us for rescue practice! If you don't feel comfortable swimming in the Hudson, please don't RSVP. **Bring a towel AND change of clothes**. Only RSVP if you can stay until the finish time. You should have completed the Novice training and have basic control of a sea kayak. We will go over wet exits (good day to do your first one), and different ways to rescue those who have capsized. You will swim, then be rescued or practice self rescue. **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP** 1. Attended at least one sea kayak training in 2026 AND 2. volunteered AT LEAST 3 shifts in 2026 during our public embayments AND 3. You can prepare all your equipment in 10 - 15 minutes with little or no assistance. You have basic control of a sea kayak. **COME PREPARED** * Appropriate quick drying clothing. Expect to be submerged (neoprene recommended) * Change of clothes * Towel * Water in a reusable bottle **TIMELINE** * 6:00 PM - Meet at HCCB. Prepare equipment * 6:10 PM - Hard cutoff to arrive. If you do not make it by this time you will not be able to join * 6:30 PM - Safety briefing, move boats to beach * 6:45 PM - Practice in the cove * 8:15 PM - Return to boathouse * 8:30 PM - Clean and put away equipment * 9:30 PM - Training ends **\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-** HCCB is completely volunteer run. Our guides generously take time out of their busy schedules to run trips and trainings. If you RSVP yes, please consider this a **commitment to attend**. If you cancel at the last minute or no-show, you take a spot away from someone else or prevent a trip/training from happening. We understand that life happens, so if you must cancel close to the start of a trip or training, please change your RSVP to “Not Going” and message the host(s) or comment in the chat. We are relocating the normal Sunday pickup game for a special edition beach game at Coney Island Beach at 1pm! We'll call game on if we have at least 10 RSVPs by 10am on the day of the game: please sign up for the Meetup event even if you responded to the Google form. As always, games are open to all skill levels and beginner friendly. Things to know: * Bring a light and dark shirt to switch between teams (not gray!) * Bring a water bottle - nearby fountains are available for refills * Bring sand socks or sneakers in case the sand is too hot for bare feet * Bring swim clothes if you want to jump in the ocean between games
