London walking tour w/ wild swim, city skyline & plastic pollution cleanup

London walking tour w/ wild swim, city skyline & plastic pollution cleanup

Sat, Jun 13, 1:30 PM
From Earth Stewards Travel Club

Join fellow eco-conscious travellers for a walking tour that combines one of London's great walks with real environmental action. We'll climb to Parliament Hill to take in one of the city's six protected panoramic views, clean up woodland paths across the Heath, take a dip in Hampstead's legendary natural bathing pond and lounge on the bank of the ponds, and finish at the Brew House Café at the historic Kenwood House to chat with new friends. **The afternoon runs like this:** We meet at Hampstead Heath Overground at 14:30pm and walk up to Parliament Hill summit for the panoramic London skyline view. From there we do our first cleanup along the southern Heath paths and pond edges before heading to the Mixed Bathing Pond for a wild swim. After drying off we walk the woodland paths toward Kenwood, doing a second cleanup along the way, and finish at the Brew House Café in the Kenwood estate grounds around 17:15pm. Total distance: approximately 3km. Duration: 3 hours. **What to bring:** Swimwear and a towel, something warm for after the swim, a reusable water bottle, and weather-appropriate layers. Litter pickers, gloves and bags are provided. **Finding the group:** Meet outside Hampstead Heath Overground Station on South Hill Park at 14:30pm. Look for the Earth Stewards Travel Club sign. The station is on the London Overground. **Please note:** The swim is for confident swimmers only. The pond is a beautiful wild swimming spot surrounded by nature, but is unheated, deep, and dark so ensure you're confident with cold water swimming. Non-swimmers are very welcome and can enjoy the pond bank while others swim. A free non-swimmer ticket is available. The ticket price covers the cost of entry to Hampstead's Mixed Bathing Pond, that's all the charge is. The guided tour, cleanup equipment, and all other elements of the afternoon are completely free. We're trialling this as a new event format for Earth Stewards Travel Club and want to keep the barrier to joining as low as possible. If you'd like to support what we're building, the best thing you can do is come along, give it a go, and tell us honestly what you thought.

East Head - (16 or 8 miles)

East Head - (16 or 8 miles)

Sat, Jun 6, 7:30 AM
From FREE Outdoor Trips From London
4.8

West Wittering is most famous for its sandy beach, and as popular a seaside venue as any within reach of the capital, with everything a visitor can hope for 😎🏖️ 82 years ago, this place was absolutely teeming - however the circumstances then were very different. On the anniversary of the momentous events that began from these shores in 1944, this walk heads to Wittering's memorial. East Head is only a stone's throw from the popular beach; yet must be walked to, which means the unspoiled dunes will be ours. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/sussex/east-head If Wittering's beach proves too delightful for some, there is a bus that one can catch back to Chichester when the day is done. A couple of options for the return walk. Depending on numbers and logistics, the optimum would be via Bosham's historic harbour. It was from here in 1064 that Harold Godwinson sailed to Normandy, invoking a chain of events destined to culminate two years later. From Harold to Eisenhower, history resonates through these sands. TRAVEL 1\. Take the 9\.05 train from London Victoria to CHICHESTER\. CHEAPEST TRAIN TICKETS - £13.00 PER PERSON RETURN: By far the cheapest train fare is to purchase a Group DaySave which allows unlimited travel on Southern trains and for a group of four (£52) is £13 each. It is also possible to buy this ticket for two (cheaper) or three people. NB the ticket must be purchased at least three days before travel from Southern's website. The link is: [Buy DaySave Train Ticket | DaySave Train Ticket | Southern Railway](https://www.southernrailway.com/discounts-and-offers/daysave) Feel free to use this event page or the event chat to find fellow travellers for DaySave tickets Alternatively, an off peak day return ticket purchased on the day to CHICHESTER is £26.70 with a Network card or Groupsave which will cover all travel. WALK DETAILS Walk starts 10.40 AM from CHICHESTER station. Circular walk The 8 miles walk involves a Service 52 bus back to Chichester from West Wittering. Every 30 minutes (24 & 54 past hour) bus stop opposite the beach *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section! IMPORTANT Please bear in mind this is a free of charge, self-guided trip with a hobby group. It is not organized by a business nor any entity with commercial purposes. Any trip details, travel advice, route planning, instructions and other content in our group merely represent our shared personal knowledge, research and suggestions as outdoor enthusiasts. As this is no business, there is no "product", "service" or "package" and also no "tour guide", "operator" or "walk leader". Each participant is responsible for their own safety. Even if some of us are very experienced walking outdoors, nobody assumes responsibility for any kind of injury, damage or loss that may happen. Despite this, we take extreme precautions and all trips we plan are very safe, fun, highly educational and popular. Our experienced members volunteer their time and effort to shape a pleasant and quality adventure for everyone :-) By participating you acknowledge and agree with this disclaimer. Here are our tips on staying safe during outdoor trips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, INSURANCE Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel and (if required) accommodation - this gives everyone the freedom and choice to join from wherever they want and stay wherever they want. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered. We advise not to buy tickets until the day. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.

Thames Foreshore Visit - Rotherhithe! (Full Members only)

Thames Foreshore Visit - Rotherhithe! (Full Members only)

Sun, Jun 7, 9:45 AM
From The London Cultureseekers Group
4.6

Running through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed. Come along on Sunday 7th June to explore London’s dynamic history... **About the foreshore** I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in. I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface). You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older. The foreshore at Rotherhithe was where lots of ships were dismantled, so you will see lots of ships nails, ships timbers and items related to the people carrying out the dismantling. The foreshore is very stony, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). Plastic gloves and bags will be provided. **Cost** This is for Full Members of the group only and will be free. **Become a Full Member** To become a Full Member (£14 a year), either: \- Pay cash at an event \- Pay via Bank Transfer \(TSB Bank plc\, Sort code: 77\-66\-65\, Account no: 00030809\, Account name: Cultureseekers) \- Pay via credit card on the day or in advance \([https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI](https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI)) \- go to PayPal \- [https://www.paypal.com/uk/](https://www.paypal.com/uk/), then click on 'Pay & Get Paid‘, then click on 'Send Money’, put in the email address: [general@cultureseekers.org](mailto:general@cultureseekers.org) in the 'Send Money' box, then 'Next' and then enter the amount to pay. Click 'Next', then 'Goods & Services', then 'For Friends & Family', then 'Continue' Benefits of becoming a Full Member [here...](https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/22974682/531979527/) We will be finished by about 12:45pm. **The Thames Foreshore is private land, so before we go down, I have to give everyone a short talk on health & safety on the foreshore. As per the conditions of my group permit, you will need to be present for this, if you are late, I won't be able to accommodate you.** **Afterwards** After, we will head to 'Mr Cappuccino coffee shop', 190 Jamaica Road for a chat over a drink. Please note, we only wait at the meeting point for 10 minutes after the advertised meeting time, so please be on time or early. If you can't see us outside the station, please text. Look out for the red & blue 'London Cultureseekers' group sign. Hope to see you there! Robert 07905 901 834 (prefer text) ***On the day, if you can’t make the visit, just change your RSVP to No or text me to say you can’t make it.*** ***Please don’t post any messages in the comments that you can’t make it, as this generates spam for everyone else.*** Please make sure you are aware of the group rules here before RSVPing - *[https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/22974682/531979527/](https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/22974682/531979527/)*
