In Alison Bechdel’s hilariously skewering and gloriously cast new comic novel confection, a work of sharp literary humor, a cartoonist named Alison Bechdel, running a pygmy goat sanctuary in Vermont, is existentially irked by a climate-challenged world and a citizenry on the brink of civil war. She wonders: Can she pull humanity out of its death spiral by writing a scathingly self-critical memoir about her own greed and privilege? Meanwhile, Alison’s first graphic memoir about growing up with her father, a taxidermist who specialized in replicas of Victorian animal displays, has been adapted into a highly successful TV series. It’s a phenomenon that makes Alison, formerly on the cultural margins, the envy of her friend group (recognizable as characters, now middle-aged and living communally in Vermont, from Bechdel’s beloved LGBTQ+ comic strip *Dykes to Watch Out For*). As the TV show *Death and Taxidermy* racks up Emmy after Emmy—and when Alison’s Pauline Bunyanesque partner Holly posts an instructional wood-chopping video that goes viral—Alison’s own envy spirals. Why couldn’t she be the writer for a critically lauded and wildly popular reality TV show…like *Queer Eye*...showing people how to free themselves from consumer capitalism and live a more ethical life?!! *Spent*’s rollicking and masterful denouement—making the case for seizing what’s true about life in the world at this moment, before it’s too late—once again proves that “nobody does it better” (New York Times Book Review) than the real Alison Bechdel. Can a book about personal envy actually save the world? **Check out our sister groups!** * [Brooklyn Movie Club](https://www.meetup.com/brooklynmovieclub/) * [Williamsburg Book Club](https://www.meetup.com/williamsburg-book-club/)

4.9

**NEW LOCATION:** OMG NYC (Origami Meetup Group! New York City) is a group for people to come together and share in the beautiful art of Origami - an ancient art of folding various mediums, most commonly paper. The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). Other materials often folded are fabric, wire mesh, sheet metal, tissue, thin plastic, cardboard, and straws. We meet as a group to teach each other new models and share paper, books, and tips. This meeting is free and open to all level of folders from beginners to advanced. There will be free paper available to share. You can bring your own paper and books, so you can just show up and fold! If you have models you would like to learn, or teach, let us know and we will try our best to accommodate. OMG NYC's WTF (Weekly Tuesday Folders) meetup is now located at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library at 455 5th Avenue. The meeting is on the 3rd floor in room 303. Registration is strongly recommended. You can go to the website [bit.ly/omgorigami](bit.ly/omgorigami) and register for the date you will be attending. Seating is limited so those who register for the event are given priority. Food is not allowed in this library except on the 7th floor. Covered drinks are allowed. The library policy for this meetup is that it is for adults only.

From Hugo and Nebula Award Winners Sci-fi Book Club Meetup
4.8

Join us for our picnic book swap. Bring a WRAPPED book, ideally genre adjacent or science, and not one we have already read as a group. I'll bring cards and pens for you to write a witty and non spoilery description to take to your book. We will go around in a circle and play book white elephant. Three steals max. Bring a drink or snack you want to share and bring a blanket. Remember this is a book swap and not a book deposit so don't bring extra books. I will do my best to bring a balloon and I'll post a more specific pin and pictures when the day comes.
