DLC November Meeting: Theo of Golden, Allen Levi

The Downtown Literary Collective's March book pick is Theo of Golden: A Novel, by Allen Levi. *Theo visits the local coffeehouse, where ninety-two pencil portraits hang on the walls, portraits of the people of Golden done by a local artist. He begins purchasing them, one at a time, and putting them back in the hands of their “rightful owners.” With each exchange, a story is told, a friendship born, and a life altered.* Join us at Pauper's Pub (539 Bloor St. West in the Annex) for food and a great book discussion, 2-4pm. New members welcome. We are a small group of women in our late 30s and 40s who have been meeting consistently every second Sunday of the month for many years. Mix up the teams as often as possible. Photos/videos may be taken during the session, to be posted for the participants. LOGISTICS: 1. Upon arrival, the free parking (Lot S2/S3 closest) is between the main Hangar entrance and the large exterior aircraft door (where the side doors may be open as a shortcut). 2. The entrance is the main Hangar entrance. Upon entry go into the lobby and turn left at the first ramp, you will see a ball hockey rink, continue past the rink and you will see our 2 indoor volleyball courts. 3. No food or breakable containers on the court. No alcohol allowed in The Hangar 4. Clean indoor non marking footwear is required to be worn. Please do not wear the shoes you are going to play with while walking into the facility 5. Washrooms available but Change Rooms & Showers NOT available at The Hangar 6. We will provide your group with up to 2 volleyballs per court to use during the rental. We suggest you use our volleyballs as balls that get stuck up on the netting will only be retrieved once in a long while by Hangar staff. **An autumn service safari through Toronto's Vale of Avoca and Moore Park Ravine** We’ll meet at David A. Balfour Park and head through the Vale of Avoca and Moore Park Ravine. Along the way, we’ll introduce and try out a classic service design tool — the **[service safari](https://servicedesigntools.org/tools/service-safari)**[ ](https://servicedesigntools.org/tools/service-safari)— using the ravine as our real-world playground. We’ll walk, observe, and capture what we notice about how we find, navigate, and experience the place. Our timing is interesting too: The City of Toronto is [currently exploring improvements to the Vale of Avoca](https://haveyoursay.toronto.ca/vale-avoca-ravine-improvements). We’ll compare what we notice, spot patterns and see what questions and opportunities emerge. We’ll also borrow lightly from Design Council’s [Skills for Planet](https://www.designcouncil.org.uk/our-work/skills-for-planet/), widening our lens beyond our own experience to notice the environment around us. **No slides. No presentations. Just curious people, a beautiful fall walk, some service design in the wild and hopefully some good fall colours. 🍁** Bring: comfortable shoes, weather-appropriate layers + a charged phone. No service design experience required - curiosity is plenty. -- Bonus: After the walk, we’ll bring what we learn together into a short set of SDD field notes that we could share with the Vale of Avoca project team.
