We play a mix of modern board games that are easy to learn, social, and fun for all experience levels. Not into games? Lucky Bamboo Mahjong Club - Beginners Welcome!

**Purchase of a ticket is required to attend this event. This event will take place on the first floor of an accessible building.** **Learn how to play *Hong Kong*-style mahjong in a non-competitive setting.** This club is open to people wishing to learn how to play mahjong with no prior experience. Some members of this club have attended previous meetings and returned to practice their skills before attempting to play more advanced mahjong events around LA. For beginners or those needing a refresher, an optional introductory mahjong presentation and demonstration will be given at **6:30 PM**. **Most people are able to play (and win!) mahjong on their own after this presentation.** Guided gameplay with other new players is offered after the presentation. Due to the need for 4 people per mahjong table and to avoid people reserving a seat but failing to show up, **we cannot offer refunds. If you plan to attend the class, please be on time as lessons will promptly begin at 6:30 PM. Feel free to reserve a seat as early as 6:00 PM.** **Parking**: There is **no parking** offered at our location, so please be prepared to find street parking or use a paid parking lot. The most affordable parking lot is $5 at Mandarin Plaza (986 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012). They close at 10 PM. An additional paid parking lot is on Broadway next to Wonder Bakery. Metered street parking is free after 8 PM. **Due to events in Chinatown, parking lots and street parking are sometimes full, so please be prepared during major holidays and popular events.** **Transportation**: The LA Metro Chinatown Station services the A Line lightrail and is located a block away from our club. Several popular LA Metro bus lines serve Chinatown Plaza and will drop you off on the same block as our club. Some of the buses include: 4, 45, 81, 90, 94, DASH Lincoln Heights/Chinatown Clockwise and the DASH B. The $16 fee will be used to maintain the space and purchase more mahjong equipment. **Players and game designers wanted for this open house style event!** Hey everyone, Chris here! Your game will be assigned to whichever session is more suitable. Very short games (20min or less) should be brought to Open Play instead. *Please note new members must come to First Play as a playtester at least once before having the opportunity to run a game.* **SCHEDULE:** Game days have 3 segments. **You do not need to come for the whole day!** However, if you are testing your own game you should stay and test at least one other designer's game as well. **OPEN PLAY TESTING** 2:00pm - 3:00 pm This is unstructured play time, ideal for very short games (20min or less), or games requiring 1-2 players. If you're a designer check in with me and then grab an available table and let people know you are looking for players. If you're a player, just sit down at a game and play! **SESSION ONE** 3:15pm - 4:15pm **SESSION TWO** 4:30pm - 6:30pm Scheduled sessions are the core of First Play! There is a 1 hour session and a 2 hour session. Before each session designers will be asked to give an 'elevator pitch' of their game, after which players can decide which game they want to play. Sessions are ideal for games that are 20-90 minutes. New members must come to First Play as a playtester at least once before having the opportunity to run a game. 6. If you have RSVP'd to run a game, show up for your time slot. The gaming details: Attendance: This is a drop-in event, so you don’t have to stay the whole time. Come for an hour, come for two hours, show up late, leave early. As long as you clean up any mess that you leave, you're good with us and the wonderful store runners, Andrew and Zoey. NOTE: It is advisable that the best way to get in on a game without waiting is to come at the beginning of the event at 2pm. Otherwise you might have to wait for a game to end and another to begin. Parking: Paper Heroes is located in a strip mall on the northwest corner of Burbank Blvd. and Hazeltine Ave. in Sherman Oaks. No, we don't know why Meetup lists the city as Los Angeles and not Sherman Oaks. There are a few parking spaces in the small shopping center, and we would suggest looking for street parking as well. Since it's Sunday, meters will be free. **Important note: It's been brought to our attention that there are a few 1 hour parking signs around the venue, so as always, check parking signs carefully so you don't get a visit from a parking fairy.** We have had good luck parking on the east side of Hazeltine, just south of Burbank. Food: Outside food and drink is allowed in. We just ask as always that you are careful so as not to spill. There's a coffee shop next door, Nat's Early Bite, which is open until 3pm. Just please be careful and don’t spill food or drink on games, or you’ll be expected to replace them, which we think is a fair policy. Also, there are some game mats placed on some tables around the stores with signs asking patrons to not place food or drink on top of them. PLEASE RESPECT THIS RULE. Don't be a jerk. Guests: Guests are great! Just be sure to note it in your RSVP, and if your guests' plans change, please update your RSVP. 12th Annual Creepy Halloween Gaming and Costume Contest!

East Valley Board Games is super excited about our 12th *annual Halloween event! (*Our numbers are off bc we had to skip a year because of Covid, blah blah blah.) We will have board games, candy, and a costume contest! We'll have a prize for our 1st place favorite costume. If this all sounds creepily cool in the ghastliest of ways, get your bony behinds down to Paper Hero's for some Halloween gaming. Andrew and the PH crew are once again graciously opening their doors to us for gaming! Costume Contest---Our Halloween gaming event is from 2pm to 6pm and as we always say, drop in whenever. However, if you plan to participate in the costume contest, you will need to be in our room at 4pm for voting. We will be announcing the top 3 vote-getters around 4:15. Anyone who attends the Halloween gaming event can vote on the winners. You don't have to come in costume, but we STRONGLY encourage it, because um, FUN.
