[Online] Getting Started with 3D Printing: Choosing Your First Printer

[Online] Getting Started with 3D Printing: Choosing Your First Printer

Tue, Jun 23, 6:00 PM
From London 3D Printing Hub

**This is an online event.** The WhatsApp group link and Google Meet link will be shared later. Interested in 3D printing but not sure where to start? Thinking about buying a printer but overwhelmed by the number of options, technologies, reviews, and recommendations online? Many people begin by looking at printer specifications or asking for advice online, only to end up more confused than before. The reality is that there is no single "best" 3D printer. The right choice depends on what you want to create, how much time you want to spend learning, and what level of maintenance and tinkering you're comfortable with. In this online meetup, we'll explore the current 3D printing landscape and discuss the key questions every beginner should ask before making a purchase. We'll compare different printer technologies, explain the advantages and trade-offs of popular designs, and look at real-world use cases ranging from practical household items and prototypes to miniatures, cosplay, and creative projects. We'll also cover the less obvious aspects of owning a 3D printer, including materials, maintenance, software, common beginner mistakes, and the hidden costs that are often overlooked when choosing a machine. The goal of this meetup is not to tell you which printer to buy, but to help you understand what you actually need and why. By the end of the session, you'll have a clearer picture of whether 3D printing is right for you and which type of printer best matches your interests, budget, and expectations. **No previous experience is required.** Bring your questions and curiosity, and let's explore the world of 3D printing together.

No prior experience is required. **About:** Spend a day learning to cut a wood block to create layered relief prints. Printing onto paper. This one day course is a great introduction to the craft of reduction woodcut printing onto ‘Awagami’ paper. Even if you have never cut into a piece of wood or have any artistic experience, You will be able to explore your creativity and learn wood cutting methods to create prints. You will be guided through the techniques to carve your own woodblock, creating a layered image as the surface of the block is cut away at each stage, printing each new colour as you go. A single block will be carved and printed in layers, lightest to darkest, until a final unique piece reveals itself. You will learn to use different woodcarving tools to make various cuts into your woodblock taking inspiration from iconic Japanese woodcut prints (like The Great Wave of Kanagawa), well known artists, nature, and patterns to create your own design with guidance from tutor Ollie Norris, or perhaps you may already have your own designs in mind? The woodcuts are shallow and do not require great strength to make, so the workshop is open to all abilities. All use of tools and materials supplied Bring an apron or wear old clothes in case some of the paint jumps onto you.
