Screen Printing as Protest

### Workshop Description ***Print as Protest*** is an accessible introduction to screen printing that explores the rich history of printmaking as a tool for activism, social movements, and political expression. Central to the workshop is an exploration of the power of text: how words, slogans, and statements can become images in their own right. Through typography, scale, repetition, and graphic composition, text can communicate urgency, solidarity, resistance, and hope. From protest placards and political posters to artist manifestos and public interventions, printed language has long been used to challenge authority, amplify marginalised voices, and mobilise communities. Participants will examine how artists, activists, and designers have transformed text into compelling visual forms, considering not only what messages are communicated but how they are seen, felt, and remembered. Through discussion and practical experimentation, participants will develop their own graphic responses to contemporary issues, translating words and ideas into bold printed works. From suffragette posters and labour movement graphics to contemporary climate activism and social justice campaigns, the workshop examines how printed images have long been used to communicate ideas, challenge power, and build collective voices. Beginners are warmly welcomed, and all technical processes will be demonstrated step-by-step. **Audience** This workshop is suitable for: * Complete beginners * Artists and makers interested in printmaking * Community activists and campaigners * Anyone interested in visual culture, social history, and creative expression **Learning Outcomes** By the end of the workshop, participants will: * Understand the basic principles and history of screen printing. * Explore examples of protest and activist printmaking. * Develop a simple graphic design or slogan suitable for screen printing. * Learn how to prepare artwork for a screen. * Gain hands-on experience in printing using screen printing techniques. * Produce a small edition of prints to take home. * Reflect on the role of printmaking as a form of communication and resistance. **Materials** All basic materials and equipment will be provided, including: * Screens and squeegees * Water-based inks * Printing paper * Design materials and reference images * Protective aprons and cleaning supplies Participants may bring sketches, photographs, slogans, or source material related to a cause or issue they would like to explore. **Accessibility** The workshop is designed to be welcoming and supportive for participants of all experience levels. A special event to share the creative practice of zine making 💭✍️✂️🎨📖 IN A NUTSHELL, zine making creates opportunities to: * spend time exploring ideas * hone in on something you love or care about: a cause, a message, a skill, a place (the possibilities are endless) * get creative with collage, drawing, writing, printmaking (etc.) * produce compelling and unique booklets that you can print cheaply and share with friends and strangers offline After lots of creative brainstorming of their own, Bonny and Ellie have landed on zine making as the perfect way to both open up space for playful, low stakes creativity, and focus their minds on bite sized projects. UniLight introduces a joint latent space to unify previously incompatible lighting representation - environment maps, images, irradiance and text descriptions. Modality-specific encoders are trained contrastively to align their representations, with an auxiliary spherical-harmonics prediction task reinforcing directional understanding. Our joint lighting embedding enables applications such as retrieval, example-based light control during image generation, and environment map generation from various modalities. *About the Speaker* [Zitian Zhang](https://www.linkedin.com/in/ztzhang76) \- is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at Université Laval\, and a research scientist intern in Adobe Research London\. He focuses on image understanding\, generation\, and lighting representations through foundation models\. **LoST: Level of Semantics Tokenization for 3D Shapes** Tokenization is fundamental to generative modeling and especially important for autoregressive 3D generation. However, current 3D shape tokenizers rely on geometric level-of-detail hierarchies that are token-inefficient and poorly aligned with semantic structure. We propose Level-of-Semantics Tokenization (LoST), which orders tokens by semantic salience so early tokens produce complete, plausible shapes and later tokens refine detailed geometry and semantics. LoST is trained with Relational Inter-Distance Alignment (RIDA), a semantic alignment loss that matches relationships in 3D shape latent space to those in DINO feature space. Experiments show that LoST achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction and efficient high-quality AR 3D generation while using only 0.1%–10% of the tokens required by prior methods. *About the Speaker* [Niladri Dutt](https://www.linkedin.com/in/niladridutt) \- is an ELLIS PhD student at University College London \(UCL\)\, sponsored by Adobe Research\. He is advised by Prof Niloy Mitra \(UCL\) and Duygu Ceylan \(Adobe\)\. **Material selection in 2D and beyond - methods, tricks and applications** In this talk, we'll explore reasoning about images from a material-centric perspective, namely through the lens of material understanding. Materials distinguish themselves by their response to light, which is governed and modelled through physical properties like roughness or gloss - however, understanding such properties is a non-trivial task for current algorithms and models. We'll see how we can select materials similar to a given query material, significantly improve selection fidelity and eventually even venture beyond 2D, to enable selection in the 3D domain. *About the Speaker* [Michael Fischer](https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-fischer-32b43b1a4/) \- is a research scientist at Adobe research London\. Queer Crafts - Mindful Drawing

Automatic life drawing: unlearning expectation for creative expression

Meeting on the full moon, this session of Esoteric Etchings will combine life drawing with surrealist exercises that have their origins in occult practice, to unlock creative expression. Automatic drawing was first developed by Austin Osman Spare, an English Artist and occultist who worked with chaos magical practice to unlearn the constraints placed on us by society to unlock the untapped power of our unconscious minds. Automatic drawing was part of this practice, letting the hand draw before the conscious minds limitations, fears and negative beliefs could restrict expression. He believed, through such practices, we could connect to ancestral memory and spiritual intelligence hidden within the psyche. Automatic drawing was later adopted by the surrealists, who understood the practice as a way to connect to the subconscious and its hidden desires. Different methods, such as speed drawing, non-dominant hand drawing and drawing in the dark or with paper hidden from view, are used to connect to artistic intuition without perfectionism or other restrictions interfering. In this session, we will break down the barriers to our intuition and connect to our inner world through automatism. We will try different methods to explore the practice, working from a life model as our inspiration. The goal of the session will not be technical reproduction, but creative expression - using the form to play with shape, tone and colour and experiment with different styles and ideas. This session will be untutored by life model and occult enthusiast, Rebecca Collins-Thompson. While it is a facilitated session with exercises and prompts, it is untutored by design, allowing your practice to be self-led and focusing on unlearning expectations around how you should approach your art practice to find pure creative expression.
