Tour of the Barings Bank Art Collection & Archive! (Full Members only)

Come along on Wednesday 7th October for a tour of the Barings Bank art collection and archive! **About the collection & Barings Bank** Barings Bank was a British merchant bank based in London, and the world's second oldest merchant bank. It was founded in 1762 and was owned by the German-originated Baring family of merchants and bankers. The bank collapsed in 1995 after suffering losses of £827 million resulting from poor speculative investments, primarily in futures contracts, conducted by its employee Nick Leeson, working at its office in Singapore. The story was turned into a film called *'Rogue Trader'*, which came out in 1999. The Dutch bank ING, purchased Barings Bank in 1995 for the nominal sum of £1. The purchase included Barings extensive art collection and historical documents going back to its formation in 1762. We will have a 2 hour curator guided tour of the art that ING purchased from Barings. It is situated in the companies hallways and meeting rooms. **Please note: there is a limit on how many people we can take on the tour, so I will randomly draw 20 names out from the list of RSVP's 10 days before the visit. I will then let you know.** **Its only open to Full Members only.** **Cost** Tour cost is £7 donation per person (payable by cash or credit card on the day). Free Exhibition at the National Archives and optional visit to Kew Gardens

Every exhibition I have seen at the National Archives has been superb and the latest one sounds no different. Join me to see this Exhibition that marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the US Declaration of Independence. The exhibition charts the emergence of the United States of America, featuring original maps, correspondence, first-hand accounts and reports. Also on display is a rare, original ‘Dunlap broadside’ of the Declaration of Independence, printed on the night of 4 July 1776. To compliment the exhibition, and straight from London's West End, there will also be the opportunity to see a small exhibition of iconic costumes from the hit musical Hamilton. We will likely stay at the exhibitions for around 1.5 hours total. Following the exhibitions, for those who fancy, we can move on to visit Kew Gardens that has a special entry price of £10 on this day (Members free and Boundless Card free). In particular, we can explore as a group some of the sculptures of Henry Moore which are temporarily dotted all over the Gardens and are an absolute delight. If anyone is a member of Kew Gardens and has the ability to take in a guest for free, then please let me know in the comments below and and any savings can be shared out among the group to make the entry price cheaper for all. Please note that a fair amount of walking will be involved in our visit around Kew Gardens. As we will be moving between two events, I suggest that you either bring a packed lunch or eat a snack at the National Archives Café. We will not have time to visit another of the restaurants in the area, as we have a packed day. As always, please only sign up if you are intending to attend. The first event is free, then the optional visit to Kew Gardens is £10 (pay yourself on the day, but may be cheaper if other attendees can take a guest in). In addition, a £2.50 fee is charged to help cover Meetup fees that the Group has to pay. The £2.50 is none refundable, even if you cancel and Meetup will also charge you a small amount on top which does not come to the group. If we have to cancel the event for bad weather or other reasons beyond our control, then your £2.50 will be brought forward as a credit against a future event as refunds are all but impossible to manage. Guided Tour of the Deutsche Bank Art Collection! (Full Members only)

Come along on Wednesday 30th September for a guided tour of the Deutsche Bank art collection. **About the collection & Deutsche Bank** Deutsche Bank opened its London office in 1973. Fifty two years later there are 100 conference rooms in the bank's London buildings named after artists from around the globe. In each room a wall plaque provides a short biography of the artist alongside their work. Floors and corridors are also hung with the Collection, making sure art is a continuous part of everyone's thought process. The reception area of the London headquarters features large artworks by Keith Tyson and Damien Hirst as well as major sculptures by Anish Kapoor and Tony Cragg however the vast majority of the art in the Deutsche Bank Collection is on a modest scale, focussing on works on paper. We are having a guided tour of the collection in the evening, lasting 1h 30mins. **Cost** Tour cost is £10 per person (payable on the day by cash or card). Visit to the William Morris Gallery at Walthamstow,including Wetlands Walk.

The William Morris Gallery is a museum devoted to the life and works of William Morris, an English Arts and Crafts designer and early socialist. It is located in Walthamstow at Water House, a substantial Grade II\* listed Georgian home. The extensive grounds of the building are a public park, known as Lloyd Park. Curiously, we have come across William Morris on other Meetup walks, namely Red House in Bexleyheath and Merton Abbey Mills in Colliers Wood. Water House in Walthamstow is where William Morris lived as a teenager. After visiting the William Morris Gallery, we will get a bus to The Ferry Boat Inn for lunch. For anyone who does not wish to have lunch in the pub there is an opportunity to visit Walthamstow Wetlands, London Wildlife Trust, across the road , where there is a cafe and tables outside where you can eat your own lunch. National Gallery: Photo Hunt | London 20s and 30s

**On Friday 25th September, we’re really excited to be heading back to the National Gallery Lates for our latest fast-paced, Photo Scavenger Hunt 🕵️** Yep every Friday, one of London’s most iconic galleries stays open late, inviting visitors to explore its treasures after hours. However, rather than simply enjoying the wonders of the art on display, to spice up our visit, we've organised one of our famous Gallery-wide team photo hunts. If you've not been to one of these before, our photo hunts are a unique mix of a fast-paced **Scavenger Hunt** and **Where’s Wally?,** set in one of the world’s most famous galleries 🖼️ We’ve curated a fresh selection of intriguing background characters, unusual objects and eye-catching snippets in the paintings across the gallery. And your team’s mission is to **locate as many of them as you can** within 90 minutes 🕵️ You’ll be armed with clues and photo hints to help you find them, but they are designed to be easy to miss - so you’ll need to keep your wits about you and your eyes peeled. And that’s not all - there’ll also be extra speed challenges along the way, that could give your team the chance to bag valuable bonus points. *"Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art."* (Stanislaw Jerzy Lec) **Join us at the Wellcome Collection for The Coming of Age exhibition.** ‘The Coming of Age’ explores experiences and perceptions of ageing, from adolescence to later life, and asks how societies can adapt for us all to age better. Across the globe, people are living longer. One in ten children in the UK are expected to live beyond the age of 100. But who gets to live longer and ‘age well’? This exhibition explores how experiences of age are shaped by our environment, culture and society. ‘The Coming of Age’ features 150 artworks and objects, from historical artefacts to works by contemporary artists including John Coplans, Serena Korda, Suzanne Lacy, Anna Maria Maiolino, Rory Pilgrim, Paula Rego and more. Open House (Sun) - Bank of England Mus, Pearly Kings/Queens & St. Barts!

Once a year in September, 800 private buildings in London open their doors for the weekend and let the public in to look around and admire their architecture. We are going to take full advantage of this visiting buildings on the Saturday and the Sunday. On the Sunday we are visiting 3 buildings. **Bank of England Museum (built in 1925)** The museum is part of the Bank of England rebuilding in the 1930's by Sir Herbert Baker. One room is a reconstruction of 1793 Bank of England Stock Office by Sir John Soane. The museum is home to a collection of diverse items relating to the history of the Bank and the UK economy from the Bank's foundation in 1694 to the present day. The museum is normally closed at weekends. Finish at 1:00pm and walk to the next building. Arrive at the Guildhall Yard - 1:15pm. **Pearly Kings & Queens Harvest Festival in Guildhall Yard** Join the Pearly Kings and Queens of London as they celebrate their traditional Harvest Festival. The event takes place in Guildhall Yard every year and there will be traditional entertainment with many Pearly Kings and Queens dressed up in their finery, there will be morris dancers, maypole dancers, marching bands, horses, donkeys and carts. Finish at 3:00pm and walk to the next building. Arrive at St. Barts Hospital North Wing - 3:15pm. **St. Bartholomew's Hospital North Wing (built in 1732)** The Grade I listed North Wing at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in the houses two of England’s most important interiors, the Great Hall, and the Hogarth Stair with its large paintings by William Hogarth. The hospital was designed by architect James Gibbs. Finish at 4:00pm and head to the pub. **Cost** Entry to all buildings is free!
