Мы неторопливо прогуливаемся между прилавками, заглядываем в антикварные лавки и вдыхаем воздух старинного города, который когда-то был излюбленным местом английской аристократии. 🍀 Следующий отрезок маршрута ведёт нас вглубь природы, к загадочным **Eridge Rocks** — скоплению песчаниковых скал, причудливо изрезанных временем и поросших мхом. Внутри вас встречает атмосфера настоящего английского трактира: тёмные деревянные балки, потрескивающий камин и гостеприимные хозяева. Здесь подают классическое воскресное жаркое с золотистым йоркширским пудингом, нежнейшей говядиной, хрустящим картофелем и густой подливкой, а в дополнение — местный эль, сваренный по старинным рецептам. Leaving town, we cross the **River Ouse** and its broad valley before climbing into the heart of the **South Downs National Park**, Britain’s newest National Park. For much of the day we hike high up on the **chalk ridges and rolling hills** of the Downs, rewarded with panoramic views that stretch inland and out to the English Channel. We pass through **glacial dry valleys** and across open downs, with long stretches where the sea draws ever nearer. Approaching the coast, our path reveals **distant vistas of the legendary Seven Sisters cliffs**, gleaming white in the sunlight. The hike concludes in **Seaford**, a small coastal town steeped in history. Here we find the **Martello Tower**, built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 towers to guard against French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. Finishing right by the beach, this is a spectacular end to one of our toughest South Downs challenges. **Toughness:** At **30km with multiple steep climbs** and a brisk pace, this is one of our longest day hikes from London. It is only suitable for experienced and very fit hikers. We take on the two highest points in Surrey: **Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill**, following ancient sandy trails and woodland ridges across the **Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty**. Surrey is the most wooded county in England, and this route showcases its very best trails. Starting from **Holmwood**, our route climbs first to **Leith Hill** (294m), the highest point in the South East of England. Here the summit is crowned by the 18th-century gothic **Leith Hill Tower**, offering some of the most far-reaching views of any of our hikes — south to the sea and the South Downs, and north as far as central London landmarks on a clear day. From there, we continue along sandy trails and woodland ridges to **Holmbury Hill** (261m), where the remains of an Iron Age fort overlook the forested Weald below. **Toughness (Please Read):** This is a **very tough, and hilly hike** with over 600m of total ascent. Expect steep sections, some loose ground, and a short section where you need to use your hands it's so steep. The **pace will average 4.0–4.4 km/h** and **the hike will not be slowed down or cut short.** It is **not suitable for beginners**. Only experienced and fit walkers should join. TREK THE GTE - THE GRAND TRAVERSE OF ELBA - ITALY

**Elba is the biggest island on the Tuscan Archipelago, a place where the Italians holiday and the GTE trail crosses the island from coast to coast linking the mountain ridgelines on the island's spine.** This cluster of 7 islands will surely become a prime destination for international tourism very soon but so far it survives as a lesser visited gem whilst the nearby Cinque Terre hogs the limelight. Backabush is planning an adventurous thru-hike completing the GTE trail in full, from coast to coast on foot in 3 hiking days. This is a tough route that takes in the island's highest summits following a trail with ocean views out to Corsica and the Tuscan hills. On this trip we will also need to pack light and carry our luggage with us 'hut-to-hut' style as there is no luggage transfer service yet on the island. **ITINERARY** Saturday 19 - We will meet in the port town of Piombino, a 90 minute train ride from Pisa, ready to catch the ferry to Elba the next day. Guesthouse accommodation in twin and triple rooms. Breakfast included. Sunday 20 - Day 1 on the GTE. Cavo to Porto Azzurro - 23km 900m ascent. We catch the 8.40 ferry Cavo and hike up to a striking ridge before following the winding trail down to Porto Azzurro. Hotel accommodation in Twin rooms, breakfast included. Monday 21 - Day 2 on the GTE. Porto Azzurro to Procchio - 20km 750m ascent. A day with many peaks crossing the central hills of the island with frequent sea views. Hotel accommodation in twin rooms, breakfast included. Tuesday 22 - Day 3 on the GTE. Procchio to Pomonte - 16kms, 900m ascent, 950m descent. Today we cross the highest peaks on the island, then it's downhill for a celebratory swim. Hotel accommodation in twin rooms, breakfast included. Wednesday 23 - Home time, we will catch a bus back to the ferry terminal for the 11am crossing and then it's back to the airport or on to another adventure. Pisa is reachable on the train by 17.30pm so evening flights can be booked for 19.30 departures or later. **DIFFICULTY** This trip has 3 long days of hiking, 20 kms/12 miles or more each day and considerable up and down so a good level of hiking fitness is required.
