What we’re about
Welcome to Westside Tabletop Adventure Games! We're a friendly gaming community on the West side of Los Angeles bringing together players who love independent and DIY tabletop games.
Adventure Games
Adventure games aren't a strict genre, they're any tabletop game where adventurous things happen to the characters, and the players have a high degree of agency to affect the course of play. These games feature meaningful consequences for player choices and embrace a "play-to-find-out" approach where the story unfolds through play rather than following a predetermined script, or using game elements as writing tools, with play detached from the fictional world. Whether you're exploring ruins, solving mysteries, or navigating political intrigue, the adventure emerges from what happens at the table.
What We Play
- Old-school RPGs such as Classic & Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Classic Traveller, RuneQuest, Tunnels & Trolls, Chivalry & Sorcery, Rolemaster, and more.
- Indie adventure RPGs like Shadowdark, Into the Odd, Cairn, Mork Borg, Cepheus, Troika!, Salvage Union and others.
- Indie and DIY wargames with simple, elegant rules like the Doomed, Lion Rampant, Space Weirdos, etc.
- Independent board games from small publishers and designers, and other board and card games generally
- Homebrew and self-published games
- Freeform games
What to Expect
We gravitate toward games that prioritize imagination over complex mechanics. Think creative problem-solving, emergent storytelling, and player agency rather than lengthy rule books or corporate game systems. Many of our games can be learned in minutes at the table, but offer deep, memorable experiences.
Our Community
We're committed to creating a welcoming space for everyone, newcomers and veterans, all backgrounds, all experience levels, and all inclusive walks of life. We especially value the DIY spirit: players and game masters who aren't afraid to modify rules, create content, or even design their own games from scratch. "Designer intent" or historical play examples are only interesting from a theoretical experiment, but the people who matter at the table are the ones actually at the table.
Our group celebrates independent game design, supports small publishers, and believes the best gaming often comes from passionate creators rather than big companies and endless consumerism. Whether you're curious about trying a weird new indie game or you're a designer wanting to playtest your own creation, you'll find a supportive community here.

Old-School D&D: Nightmare Over Ragged Hollow
West LA - Near Wilshire & Bundy, Wilshire & Bundy, Los Angeles, CA, USNightmare over Ragged Hollow is a sandbox adventure centred around a quaint town at the edge of the kingdom. But however quiet life in Ragged Hollow is, the town lies between places where you shouldn’t be traveling alone. Places like Gloam Wood (“A witch or two lurk there!”), the Bleak Mountains (“I’m told there are bugbears…”) and their infamous Mount Mourn (“Home, they say, to cursed Dwarven ruins”), not to forget the Wailing Hills (“Bandits on every road!”). There’s even a haunted house by the river (“That mad inventor riddled it with traps!”). But only when an impenetrable dome of golden light materialises around the Temple of Halcyon (“Hey, my kids go to school there!”) do things really get out of hand. Some selfless heroes (or, failing that, a bunch of greedy ne’er-do-wells) should really get involved.
Is this open to beginners?
Yes! Folks of all experience levels are welcome!
What do I need to bring?
Nothing - I will provide everything. If you want to bring your own dice, a pencil, and/or a miniature that works as well, but I will have everything here.
What version of Dungeons & Dragons is this?
We will be running a house-ruled version of the 1974 edition of Dungeons & Dragons, sometimes called "Original Dungeons & Dragons" or "0e." This edition is known for being very open-ended, focusing on creative solutions rather than picking the right "moves," and one of the origin points of our hobby. You do not need to know the rules to play!
Do I need to make a character before session?
Nope, we will make characters at the table. Doing so only takes a few minutes.6 attendees
