Optimistic Orators Toastmasters Club
Royal Oak Community Center, 3500 Marais Ave, Royal Oak, MI, USThe Optimistic Orators Club is an advanced club that meets on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. It was chartered over 30 years ago to challenge experienced Toastmasters to bring their speaking and leadership to the next level. It has been a President’s Distinguished Club for 25 consecutive years.
This club has two requirements for becoming a member. First, you must be an active member of another Toastmaster Club. Our objective is to make you a better toastmaster, so you can be a leader in your home club.
Our second requirement is that you have completed the first two levels in one Pathways path or completed a Competent Communicator in the old program.
One of the key differences of an advanced club is the level of feedback that you will receive. In addition to a regular 2 to 3 minute evaluation of your speech, you will also receive a round-robin evaluation. This feedback from experienced Toastmasters is well-thought-out and specific to your needs. The speaker gets the benefit of many different opinions. Are you brave enough for that level of feedback?
At an advanced club, you will have the opportunity to work on specialty and longer format speeches, that may not fit into your home club’s agenda. We have members of our club that are in district leadership. We also have many members who compete in the speech contests. Our standards are higher. We will help you take your craft to the next level.
We would love to have you come as a guest to one of our meetings. We meet on the second Saturday (Hybrid /In person and Zoom) and fourth Saturday (Zoom only) of each month, at 9:30 AM Eastern local time. Our hybrid meetings allow members and guests to join virtually or in person at the Royal Oak Senior Center. Visit our club’s website for more information.

About Huron Valley Toastmasters
Huron Valley Toastmasters is a small (~8-12 people per meeting is fairly common), welcoming club that strikes a balance when it comes to experienced Toastmasters and new members. Some Huron Valley Toastmasters have been here for decades, while others have only recently started their Toastmaster journey. Our club members also come from many different backgrounds. We have university professors, entrepreneurs, volunteers (one of which was in the Peace Corps!), writers, world travelers, and more!
What makes Huron Valley Toastmasters so special?
- Hybrid setup. We allow for virtual meetings every week, but on the second and fourth Tuesdays, we also allow for a hybrid structure. Members and guests have the opportunity to build proficiency with both meeting contexts.
- Ample opportunity for speaking. Given that we are a small but dynamic club, members and guests will get plenty of opportunities to speak in a friendly, supportive environment.
- Supportive club personality. If you ever have a question or need assistance, our members are ready to jump in and give you a hand. This is an excellent opportunity to work on skills such as leadership, teamwork, English, and comfort with public speaking.
Here is the structure of a typical Huron Valley Toastmasters meeting:
- Success stories and gratitudes (we enjoy starting out on a positive note! There's also an opportunity for introductions if there are guests)
- Team Introductions (Laughmaster, Tipmaster, Timer, and Grammarian/Ah-Ha Counter)
- Speeches (1 - 2 speeches each meeting)
- Speech evaluations (we call this the "gift" portion of the meeting, because we view evaluations as gifts!)
- Tabletopics (a 1-2 minute impromptu speaking opportunity - stories and creativity are encouraged!)
- Grammarian/Ah-Ha Counter Report (evaluates the club's usage of the English language, also highlighting funny, clever, or interesting phrases)
- General Evaluator Report (evaluates the club meeting overall)
- Toastmasters Spotlight (any upcoming Toastmasters opportunities)
- Closing (including some words of inspiration!)
