See all- Angel Island mindfulness hikeAngel Island, Tiburon, CA
Enjoy the beauty of Angel Island mindfully.
The largest natural island in San Francisco Bay, Angel Island—a California state park—is often overshadowed by the much smaller Alcatraz Island. Yet with an equally interesting history as a West Coast version of Ellis Island, Angel Island also offers hiking, biking, and picnicking, all with views of the San Francisco Bay, city skyline, and Golden Gate Bridge.
Distance: Approximately 8 miles. Elevation gain: Approximately 800 feet.
Bring: 2 Liters of water. Lunch. Sunscreen. Decent hiking boots/suitable shoes for hiking. A hat. Hiking Poles (optional). Angel Island can vary in temperature from chilly to quite warm, so bring layers of clothing.
Please Note: A portion of this hike will be a guided, silent, walking meditation. Please come prepared to walk quietly and with your senses attuned to your surroundings.Directions: ANGEL ISLAND IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE BY FERRY. To get to the Island, you have 2 recommended choices:
- Drive to the Angel Island ferry parking lot in Tiburon, and catch the ferry to the Island: https://angelislandferry.com/schedule/ (for schedule and cost-PURCHASING TICKETS ON THIS SITE AHEAD OF TIME IS RECOMMENDED).
- Take Ferry from San Francisco: https://www.goldengate.org/ferry/route-schedule/?RouteId=165&backurl=%2Fferry%2Fschedules-maps%2F (for schedules and cost);

- POLE Walking for Exercise (Nordic Walking) At Lands End, For VeteransLands End, San Francisco, CA
Sierra Club Military Outdoors special program provides free training for Veterans and their family members. Join us to enjoy fresh air, spectacular views and excellent exercise.
Pole Walking for exercise is also called Nordic Walking. Studies have shown you can recruit significantly more calories using poles over regular walking. You're using about 90% of your muscles while walking. You'll feel invigorated, taller and more confident! And, you'll be walking YOUNG.
Carrying weights is a terrible idea on many levels. Pole Walking engages the largest muscle in your back as well as core and arm muscles – while you’re walking.
Top quality poles provided for your use or bring your own.
End time approximate. Here are more BENEFITS of Learning Optimal Use of POLES:
- Achieve, maintain, even regain mobility
- Reduce risk of falling
- Use your upper body muscles to improve strength and help preserve your joints
- Reduce stress on knees, hips and spine
- Maintain & restore spine function; improve bone density
- Poles are sporty (and FUN), so encourage compliance and use
- Improve performance on a variety of terrain – expand your capabilities & horizons
- Using poles encourages focus so that you can more easily achieve these many benefits
- Enjoy the outdoors, connect with your buddies and get great exercise!
The triple win of poles is that (1) you’re able to engage your whole body while walking and (2) you can connect with your buddies while (3) enjoying the beautiful outdoors.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED: Please only reserve a spot if you truly intend to come. If you have to cancel, please advise the leader so another veteran can benefit from this training.
