What we’re about
This is a group for Millennials/Gen Y folks who want to get out around Portland and meet more people. As one of the group's organizers (Hi, I'm Jay [they/them]!), this group has helped to create friendships and community for myself and others. Follow us on Instagram (@portlandmillennialsmeetup) for more happenings around Portland beyond our events.
I strive toward planning low-barrier and inclusive events, meaning that people of all backgrounds and abilities can participate. I look for opportunities for low cost and alcohol-free activities. Unfortunately, option can be limited by weather and venues suitable for our size group to hang out. I encourage anyone in the community who is interested in planning additional events to contact me. More organizers and more events are very welcome!
The values of this group are anti-racist and welcoming to people of all genders, sexual orientations, cultures, abilities, and neurodivergence. I try to approach conflict with curiosity and encourage the practice of "calling in" someone in response to a prejudiced comment, but harassment or disrespectful behavior is not tolerated.
The group's age demographic provides a common ground for building community within our cohort. Please reach out if you fall outside of Gen Y and are having trouble finding meetup groups.
A few more guidelines: If you sign up for an event, please try to keep to your commitment. If your plans change at any time, you should change your RSVP status. Members who have been inactive (i.e. haven't visited the website) for 3+ years will be removed from the group, but can rejoin at any time.
Wait lists: Some events fill up fast, but please join the wait list if you're interested in coming. People often get moved off the wait list. If there's a long wait list, I'll know to host a similar event soon.
Looking forward to meeting everyone and getting out and about!

Read Harder Book Challenge 2026 Kick Off Discussion @ Novel
Novel, 643 Congress St, Portland, ME, USBook Riot has released their 2026 Read Harder Book Challenge. The challenge is simple - there's a list of 24 objectives ranging from genre types to books written by diverse authors. The goal: expand your reading and MAYBE get through some of those books on your TBR pile.
Instead of all of us reading the same book, we'll actually all try to complete the same task(s) before the next meet up with whatever book you want to read on your own. We'll vote on a task to complete, do a little book research and give suggestions and ideas. Then the next meet up, we'll discuss the book we chose to read and select the next task. You can track your tasks completed on a PDF.
Our first meet up, we'll talk about the challenge and any tasks people are looking forward to. Then we'll vote on our first task(s) and decide how often we want to try and meet.
So, it'll be a book club without the assigned book - so you only read the books you choose!
I'll post updates in the comments so keep an eye out for those notifications. Stay home if you're feeling ill or exposed to someone sick. I have reached out to Novel about registering a book club in order to get 10% discount and to ask their preferred days for groups to meet. The date/time may change based on their feedback.8 attendees
Portland City Council (Watch & Discuss)
Portland City Hall, 389 Congress St, Portland, ME, USJoin us at Portland City Hall at 5:00PM where we will watch the City Council meeting in the Overflow Room (Room 209). We will stay until 7PM (or earlier if the meeting ends) and, if there's critical mass, we'll regroup at Novare Res (4 Canal Plaze #1) to hangout and discuss. Arrive whenever you can to the meeting. You don’t have to be there for the start or stay the whole time.
- Where will we be?: Meet us in the "overflow" room on Level 2 just down the hall from Council chambers. This room is set up with a TV broadcasting the meeting from chambers and has a comfortable setup with conference tables and chairs. After business hours, you will need to enter City Hall through the side entrance on Myrtle St. There are friendly security staff by the Myrtle St door that can tell you where to go.
- What are we doing there?: Getting a sense of local governance and how our city ticks. Feel free to bring a snack or non-alcoholic drink with you to the overflow room. Talking, eating, and drinking are perfectly fine in this room. It's a casual atmosphere. No participation in public comment necessary, but if you want, there is public comment on non-agenda items right at the start of the meeting, and public comment on other agenda items throughout the meeting.
- What to expect: A meeting agenda will be posted by the city at least a couple days in advance and we'll let you know when that's available. The council covers all sort so city governance including business licenses, departmental budgets, housing and urban development, historic preservation, parks & rec, etc. The council follows parliamentary procedure. You can look at past agenda/minutes or watch previous meetings here: https://www.portlandmaine.gov/602/Agendas-Minutes
- Why go to a city council meeting?: Because government decisions at the city level have a HUGE impact on our lives, and it's actually super interesting to see how the city operates and why things are the way they are. Being informed about what is happening in the city is cool, even if you don't want to be directly involved.
- Why is this a meetup?: Because city government is another aspect of community, and community building is the point of having meetups. We do not have a political motive or goal for organizing this event, and all respectful viewpoints are welcome.
- Who is my district's city councilor? You can find your city district on this map and then see which councilor is elected to your district here. There are 5 districts in Portland represented by different councilors, plus 3 "at large" councilors who represent everyone.
- Transportation/Parking: City Hall is centrally located on the peninsula and is a few blocks away from the GP Metro Pulse if the bus is an option for you. For drivers, there is 1 or 2 hour street parking around the area, and parking is free after 6pm.
I'll post updates in the comments so keep an eye out for those notifications. Stay home if you're feeling ill or exposed to someone sick.
