About us
Portland AI Engineers is a community of software developers at all experience levels exploring the frontiers of generative AI through hands-on experimentation. We're builders who leverage cutting-edge models—from frontier APIs to on-device, LLMs to multimodal—to create practical applications ranging from personal hobby projects to enterprise-scale solutions. Join us to share discoveries, compare approaches, and push the boundaries of what's possible in this rapidly evolving field.
What is an AI Engineer? An AI Engineer is a software developer who integrates existing language model capabilities into products that solve real-world problems. We are not pre-training models or delving deep into data science—we're focused on applying our foundational software development skills to harness generative AI and its surrounding tools ecosystem to build scalable, user-centric applications.
"In numbers, there's probably going to be significantly more AI Engineers than there are ML engineers / LLM engineers. One can be quite successful in this role without ever training anything."
— Andrej Karpathy, Formerly OpenAI, Tesla

2026 June Meetup
Multnomah County Library Albina Branch, 205 NE Russell St, Portland, OR, US=== RSVP on Luma ====
This month we've got a full lineup: four builders showing what they've shipped with AI, from an agentic operating system for running a one-person business to tooling that keeps AI-generated code honest. Come see what's possible, ask questions, and meet the people building it.
The talks:
Owen Spencer - Agents at Work: Building an AI Operating System for My Business
What does it actually look like to run an AI consultancy with AI? This talk traces the evolution of my personal operating system, from early n8n experiments to a layered stack built on NanoClaw, Paperclip, Notion, Obsidian, and GBrain. I'll walk through how these tools work together to run Friends With Robots: managing context, routing tasks, and keeping a solo founder grounded and moving. Less theory, more what I actually built and why it works.
Owen is the founder of an AI enablement consultancy focused on how AI is reshaping the nature of work itself: not just the tools we use, but the roles, rhythms, and structures we build around them.
Ben Parisot - The Urgent Need for Codebase Intelligence
This demo walks through how Scrubby turns a repo into a senior reviewer for AI-generated code. It starts with indexing the codebase and ingesting its history, then uses that context to cluster files into the architectural domains your team works in and map how those domains connect. We'll also tour the admin panel, covering the repo overview, domain network, conventions, and recent audits. The demo closes with a live AI-generated diff reviewed in the terminal and run as a check on a GitHub PR.
Ben is an engineering manager, software engineer, entrepreneur, and arts & craftsman obsessed with building AI-enabled tools to help developers ship safer, faster, and with less AI slop.
Geoff Jensen - TrackBack: AI-native symptom tracking and diagnostics
TrackBack is a voice-first tracking app: you speak naturally about your day and it parses your words into structured signals (symptoms and the factors behind them) and charts them over time. No forms, no tapping. I'll demo the current build and the parsing that makes frictionless capture work, then share where it's headed: turning that structured personal data into the substrate for an AI agent that reasons over your life, not your chat history. It's an early product with a specific bet about the future of AI UX.
Geoff is a product designer and AI technologist with 25 years of experience across eight startups and four tech revolutions. He's currently shipping AI-native products solo, in public, in real time.
Joseph Draper - C7Link: AI-Powered Event Networking
C7Link is an AI-powered event networking app, and this will be a live, interactive demo. Scan a QR code as you arrive, create a short profile, and tell it who you'd like to meet. C7Link then scans the room and suggests AI matches so everyone can network their skills and ambitions. You'll get to try it during the meetup, and Joseph wants your feedback to help shape where it goes next.
Joseph is a Portland-based startup founder and self-described problem solver capitalizing on AI coding tools to cut MVP costs. He's built three apps aimed at improving life for Oregonians, and is here to present C7Link.Schedule:
- 5:00 - 5:30: Snacks and networking
- 5:30 - 6:30: Demos start
- 6:30 - 7:00: Wrap up and networking
