Sunday POLO match at Bryn Du Mansion in Granville
Sun, Sep 13, 7:00 PMColumbus Ski Club Spectators are welcome to the Sunday POLO match on September 13 at 3:00 at Bryn Du Mansion in Granville. Polo match is from 4:00 to 5:30. All Sunday POLO matches are on the great lawn of Bryn Du Mansion in Granville, Ohio, located at 537 Jones Rd NE, Granville, OH 43023 and are free to attend. Arrive at 3:00 and setup for snacks/ appetizers on the side lines. Parking for Polo is available along the playing field with signs telling you where to go when you enter. Usual place for a group to park is mid-field at sideline close to small spectator stands. I will be there with others, setting up some tables and tents (if available) by our parked cars, so will be easy to see where we are. Bring your own chair or blanket. You are encouraged to bring appetizers, fruit, veggies, snacky food, but do not have to. A great way to socialize, watch a Polo game, and tailgate. Usually the line umpire will stop by on their horse and chat. Along with some local and Argentina Polo players galloping by. Games begin at 4pm. Bring your own blanket or lawn chair. Please follow parking signs. Games are influenced by changes in weather, please check their website for updates. Please keep all pets on a leash and don’t leave trash on the polo field. Be sure to check the website or social media before coming, in case of cancellation due to weather or wet fields. We recommend bringing a blanket or chairs, and your picnic. There are no drinking fountains on the polo fields. Portable toilets are available. **How should you behave at a polo match?** Polo Etiquette: how should you behave? Feel free to cheer and clap: this will not scare the horses and is welcomed. Goals, good plays as interceptions or long runs up the field are exciting and should be celebrated. Attendees can bring a picnic and rug and enjoy it with some rosé wine - the unofficial polo drink. **What do spectators do at a polo match?** At halftime, it is customary to invite the spectators onto the grass field to help replace the divots kicked up by the horses hooves. This tradition is a great time to walk the field, take photos and socialize before the second half of the game. Do not wear good shoes like you see in pictures. Unless you do not mind the horse manure. **What do people eat at polo matches?** If you're preparing food for a larger gathering, or even just a couple for a day at a polo match, finger foods and easy summertime foods like charcuterie, fruits, crusty bread, marinated vegetables and salads will be sure to please picnickers during the warm days. **How many chukkas are in a polo?** Chukker: Term used for a period of play in polo. Seven and a half minutes long. There are between four and six chukkers in a match. In between each chukker, players must head for the sidelines or back to their trailers to switch their ponies for the following chukker. **What is the most common horse for polo?** The most common breeds used for polo today in the United States are the Thoroughbred and the Quarter Horse. Polo Ponies are also imported annually from countries around the world including Argentina, England, New Zealand, and Mexico to name just a few. ***POLO:*** The objective of the game is to hit the ball down the field and score as many goals as you can. After a goal is scored the teams switch side. There are four chukkas (periods of play) in a match and each one lasts seven minutes. Anytime the ball crosses the line between the goal posts, regardless of who (including ponies) knocks it through. Play starts with the umpire throwing in the ball between the two teams lined up in front of him. In the same way play is restarted after a goal is scored or if the ball goes out over the side boards. If the ball goes over the back line there is a hit-in by the defenders. There is no offside in polo nor is there a corner, instead a 60 yd hit from the back line is taken by the attacking side opposite where the ball went out of play. Two mounted umpires control the game. After they have blown their whistle for an offence, they often consult each other on the severity of the foul. Should they disagree they can seek the opinion of the referee or ‘third man’ as he is often known in the stands. The main rule in polo is that the player on the line of the ball, has the right of way and may only be challenged by being ridden off, or having his stick hooked. A player riding along the line of the ball in the opposite direction may, if it is not dangerous, hit the ball provided it is the corresponding forehand or backhand as the original player. This rule can generally be compared with a dual carriageway with the central reservation being the line of the ball. There are strict rules covering the entry into that right of way and the severity of any infringement governs the severity of the penalty awarded. The penalties depend on the severity of the offence.
