Discovering Another Rome: San Giovanni in Laterano Virtual Walking Tour
·OnlineOnlineREGISTRATION REQUIRED! Click here to register
Join us for a fascinating virtual walking tour through one of the most important and historic areas of Rome: the Lateran district.
Our journey begins at the magnificent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the oldest and highest-ranking of Rome’s four major papal basilicas. Often called the “Mother and Head of all the churches in the city and the world,” it was the official residence of the popes for centuries, long before the Vatican became the center of papal life.
Our walk will continue through the historic Lateran complex, where emperors, popes, pilgrims, and artists have left their mark. We will admire the ancient Egyptian obelisk standing in the square, one of the tallest and oldest obelisks in Rome, and uncover the stories hidden behind the surrounding palaces and monuments.
We will then reach the Scala Santa, or Holy Stairs, one of Rome’s most sacred pilgrimage sites. According to Christian tradition, these twenty-eight marble steps once led to the palace of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem and were climbed by Jesus before his trial.
At the top of the staircase lies the Sancta Sanctorum, the former private chapel of the popes, once considered one of the holiest places in medieval Rome. We will discover its mysterious history, precious decorations, sacred images, and the meaning behind the ancient inscription declaring that no place in the world is more holy.
Come with us to explore a part of Rome filled with beauty, devotion, legends, and more than seventeen centuries of history.HOW TO JOIN:

Step into one of the greatest mysteries of Renaissance art with this fascinating virtual tour with slides dedicated to the Battle of Anghiari.
