What we’re about
Green Reliable Software Budapest sponsored by the Green Software Foundation, is a community of software developers in Hungary passionate about building sustainable and environmentally-friendly software.
Our mission is to empower our community with the tools and knowledge needed to build sustainable and carbon aware software solutions. We aim to build an inclusive community in Budapest that accelerates the adoption of environmentally sustainable software practices through knowledge‑sharing, hands‑on learning, and collaboration, in alignment with the Green Software Foundation (GSF) principles.

Ahead of our hashtag#HACK4EARTHBUDAPEST kick-off on Friday, 29 August 2025 (18:00 CEST), here’s what to expect.
Keynote & host: jon LABAN - champion of open technology for sustainable digital infrastructure.
Jon’s work advances the open tech collaborative commons, bringing together: open-source software, open hardware and open data to help decarbonise data centres. He’s known for community-driven approaches that turn systems thinking into measurable environmental gains.
Also joining: Mpho Mathabathe-Mala (Data Immigrant LLC), organizer of Green Reliable Software: Budapest, sharing stories at the nexus of environmental justice, citizen science and green software.
The question: Can AI be green, and what does that actually mean?
At kick-off, we’ll cover:
• Practical strategies to define and
reduce Scope 3 green house gas emissions.
across digital
infrastructure.
• Ways to reduce grid pressure from data centres (e.g. localisation, right-sizing, energy-aware scheduling).
• How open communities accelerate adoption of lower-carbon patternsThe Hackathon Primer: Missions.
1. Build green AI: Design models/systems that minimize their own environmental footprint, and report nature-relevant outcomes where possible (e.g., kg CO₂e emitted/avoided, litres of water used/saved, e-waste avoided, recoverable waste heat repurposed).2. Use AI for green impact: Apply AI for sustainable measurable benefits in energy, agriculture, water, transport, health, waste or early-warning systems. Quantify outcomes (e.g. hectares restored, biodiversity indices improved, pollutant loads reduced, m³ water saved, tCO₂e avoided, heat-stress days reduced, people protected).
Why it matters: The question persists, can AI help fix the planet, while running - without wrecking it?
