Elvis Presley's 91st Birthday Celebration - Music History Livestream - Hosted by Robert Kelleman

It's Saturday night, let's get together and remember the "King of Rock & Roll," Elvis Presley, on what would have been his 91st birthday.

Music History Livestreams present noteworthy songs from featured artists along with the historical and cultural context of their music.
During and after our program you'll have the opportunity to discuss the music with your fellow participants via Zoom.

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977), also known simply as Elvis, was an American singer, musician and actor. He is regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century and is often referred to as the "King of Rock and Roll" or simply "the King". His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, combined with a singularly potent mix of influences across color lines during a transformative era in race relations, led him to great success—and initial controversy.
Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family when he was 13 years old. His music career began there in 1954, recording at Sun Records with producer Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of African-American music to a wider audience. Presley, on rhythm acoustic guitar, and accompanied by lead guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, was a pioneer of rockabilly, an uptempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. In 1955, drummer D. J. Fontana joined to complete the lineup of Presley's classic quartet and RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who would manage him for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the United States. With a series of successful network television appearances and chart-topping records, he became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll.
In November 1956, Presley made his film debut in Love Me Tender. Drafted into military service in 1958, Presley relaunched his recording career two years later with some of his most commercially successful work. He held few concerts, however, and guided by Parker, proceeded to devote much of the 1960s to making Hollywood films and soundtrack albums, most of them critically derided. In 1968, following a seven-year break from live performances, he returned to the stage in the acclaimed television comeback special Elvis, which led to an extended Las Vegas concert residency and a string of highly profitable tours. Years of prescription drug abuse severely compromised his health, and he died suddenly in 1977 at his Graceland estate at the age of 42.

The Fort Worth Stockyards is a historic district that is located in Fort Worth, Texas, north of the central business district. A 98-acre (40 ha) portion encompassing much of the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Fort Worth Stockyards Historic District in 1976. It holds a former livestock market which operated under various owners from 1866.
Step into the West. Fort Worth is where the West begins, and nothing embodies Western heritage better than the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District. Cost: FREE for the tour! Optional lunch after at your own expense.

Parking: Many options (mostly paid) throughout the area. Please arrive in the area several minutes early so that you have time to find parking and walk to our meeting point.

Before the Event: Socializing and icebreakers from 9:30 - 9:40 am.

Meeting Point: At the Quanah Parker statue in front of the Hyatt Place Hotel (132 East Exchange Avenue - Fort Worth). Look for your host Robert (wearing a fedora-style hat) and a group of friendly people. We’ll depart on our walking tour at approximately 9:40 am.

Late Arrivals: We’ll be at Quanah Parker statue for several minutes, until approximately 9:40 am, before departing. Then our next stops will be inside the Fort Worth Stockyards Station (140 East Exchange Avenue), in front of the Swift & Company Office Building (600 East Exchange Avenue) and then to the Fort Worth Livestock Exchange (131 East Exchange Avenue).

Icebreaker Introductions: We should have a good-sized group so instead of everyone introducing themselves to the group we will get to know each other by distributing blank stickers and colored markers and we’ll ask everyone to write down on their sticker: 1). first name. 2). favorite food. 3). dream vacation. Example: “Michele - Strawberries - Kenya” or “Robert - Chocolate - Japan”.

You’re invited to join us for a 2-part livestreamed art history series covering the fabulous American art collection at the Art Institute of Chicago, one of my favorite places.
The American galleries in Chicago feature one of the world’s top collections of American art, with works by Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Frederic Remington, Frank Lloyd Wright, Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, and more.
Out art history program will highlight “The American Experience”, including various aspects of Chicago history and culture.

The Art Institute of Chicago, founded in 1879, is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the world. It is based in the Art Institute of Chicago Building in Chicago's Grant Park. Recognized for its curatorial efforts and popularity among visitors, its collection, stewarded by 11 curatorial departments, is encyclopedic, and includes works such as Georges Seurat's A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Pablo Picasso's The Old Guitarist, Edward Hopper's Nighthawks, and Grant Wood's American Gothic. Its permanent collection of nearly 300,000 works of art is augmented by more than 30 special exhibitions mounted yearly that illuminate aspects of the collection and present curatorial and scientific research.
As a research institution, the Art Institute also has a conservation and conservation science department, five conservation laboratories, and Ryerson and Burnham Libraries, one of the nation's largest art history and architecture libraries.
The growth of the collection has warranted several additions to the museum's 1893 building, which was constructed for the World's Columbian Exposition. The most recent expansion, the Modern Wing designed by Renzo Piano, opened in 2009 and increased the museum's footprint to nearly one million square feet, making it the second-largest art museum in the United States, after the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Art Institute is associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a leading art school, making it one of the few remaining unified arts institutions in the United States.

In Search of Mozart - Music & Film History Livestream Hosted by Robert Kelleman

Let’s meetup and celebrate Mozart’s 270th birthday (January 27, 1756) with a two-part music history program.

Part 1 will be a full screening of the excellent documentary In Search of Mozart, 2006.
Part 2 will be a full screening of the iconic film Amadeus, 1984, with Tom Hulce in the title role.

The two films will be shown separately, at different times, but with the same Zoom link, join us for either or both.
During and after the program you’re invited to discuss the films with your fellow music lovers via Zoom.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791) was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical period. Despite his short life, his rapid pace of composition and proficiency from an early age resulted in more than 800 works representing virtually every Western classical genre of his time. Many of these compositions are acknowledged as pinnacles of the symphonic, concertante, chamber, opera, and choral repertoires. Mozart is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music, with his music admired for its "melodic beauty, its formal elegance and its richness of harmony and texture".
Born in Salzburg, Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. At age five, he was already competent on keyboard and violin, had begun to compose, and performed before European royalty. His father, Leopold Mozart, took him on a grand tour of Europe and then three trips to Italy. At 17, he was a musician at the Salzburg court but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position. Mozart's fruitless journey in search of employment led him to Paris, Mannheim, Munich, and eventually back to Salzburg. He died at the age of 35.
