Do you love a good scare — the kind that creeps up on you from the page instead of the screen? Whether you’re a lifelong horror reader or just dipping your toes into the dark, this group is for anyone who enjoys exploring the strange, unsettling, and spine-tingling side of fiction.
The vibe will be casual and friendly — perfect for both fearless horror enthusiasts and those who still sleep with a light on. We’ll meet regularly to discuss a chosen horror novel, share recommendations, and chat about everything from spine-chilling supernatural to disturbing psychological chillers.
Don’t worry if you haven’t finished (or even started!) the book by meetup time — you’re still very welcome to join the discussion, meet fellow horror fans, and enjoy the atmosphere. The focus is on connection, conversation, and fun, not homework.
Books will be chosen from member recommendations, with a few simple guidelines: nothing too long (ideally under 500 pages), not too old (we’re focusing on post-1970 horror), and we’ll try to venture beyond the usual Stephen King and Dean Koontz titles to discover new and underrated voices in horror - however these are suggestions, not rules. We’ll meet in relaxed, accessible locations around Canberra. Some meetups might even include themed dinners or spooky reading nights if there’s interest! Suggestions for books and venues are always welcome — this is a group for everyone who loves a good fright, a good story, and good company.
This group is part of the broader Canberra Horror Groups, which also includes the Canberra Horror Movie Fans Meetup Group. Together, we celebrate all things horror — from chilling reads to big-screen scares — with a welcoming community of local fans.
(This group is LGBTQ+ friendly, and we welcome members from all backgrounds and levels of horror fandom.)
