About us
We read Astral Codex Ten, a blog that spans across rationality, science, psychiatry, medicine, ethics, genetics, AI, economics, and politics. https://astralcodexten.substack.com/about We also largely merged with the local Less Wrong meetups.
You should join if you're interested in any of these topics and want to nerd out with other nerds! You don't have to read the blog to come to our events. Everyone is welcome - please feel free come even if you feel like you're "not the type of person who normally would fit in at such events".
The meetup.com group is irregularly updated. The two places we're consistent about putting announcements are the mailing list ([https://groups.google.com/g/ssc-boston](https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fgroups.google.com%2Fg%2Fssc-boston%3Ffbclid%3DIwcGRvZgFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFNQmVqVEZMbVgzR0NZRmlSc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHtJq63QVowf6lnfK5psuo1B6cX74E7YoXE9ULON9bVC3lKE6IdQSW_NuiafN_aem_eqQBADHBxCmbliIHbU90wQ&h=AUBsGN-cSKpqZqShdTYg3Q6HVzaVSRiH9kIEEy-p2jFvlTRT10VPCCh01cVW6iQOvlpwoP0eTQC7hCYnLDBUkImv150QgcbCO0vp0oJyokFyFQUXGwiZcoEJWkU8J1oH4plFk_VkAMa9eUdrQw)) and the discord ([https://discord.gg/2N2ADpACkw](https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscord.gg%2F2N2ADpACkw%3Ffbclid%3DIwcGRvZgFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFNQmVqVEZMbVgzR0NZRmlSc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHit_w1feVl-Msye0d654Ga-mGomlDbH7D8_J36nDBBdXQIJF5wuguagq1ZUd_aem_fIWDBj6CDfpxquNh0YwdCQ&h=AUCPb0nCfWMeZse2C7-oYsDC7ImW9C-gwXgEGx4fFRStWdBIZagJeBqzixWrUJxoHw6cQ5YcCoFlcj92911Tz35k9s5Y-Mdv3BCp8on2vwCiO2OYQLO1cUBqMRZSUxG7K8vFozk92ngH8zNmEw)). There exist Facebook and Meetup.com and LessWrong groups, but we aren't reliably about crossposting there.
We fairly reliably have meetups Wednesday night and Saturday afternoon or evening.
Astral Codex Ten was formerly called Slate Star Codex. The author, Scott Alexander, has written over 1,500 posts. Don't worry, you're not expected to have read all of them!
If you're not sure where to start, check out this compilation of some his greatest works here from one of our meetup members:

AI Salon with John-Clark Levin
Cambridge Public Library, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA, Cambridge, MA, USPlease RSVP at https://luma.com/056kdakp
Join us for a salon-style discussion with John-Clark Levin, who has been research lead for the futurist Ray Kurzweil for over ten years. Recently he has been engaging Catholic leadership on AI issues. He is visiting town from Los Angeles.
We'll start with a 15 minute monologue from John-Clark and then move to Q&A and discussion.
Questions we may discuss with John-Clark:
- What are the most interesting things you learned while working with Ray?
- Do you think Ray's predictions are holding true?
- What have you done to do outreach to the Vatican and the Catholic community to get them involved in the AI discourse?
- What is the view of Catholic leadership regarding AI? What concerns do they have?
- Where do you sit on the "accel vs decel" spectrum, has your position on that spectrum changed over the last ten years, and how do you decide where you stand?
- Is there an AI bubble?
Co-hosted by Dan Elton of the Metascience Observatory and Steven Wardell of What Comes Next and the DigitalHealth InvestorTalk Show.
Held in the Basement Auditorium of the Cambridge Public Library (main branch).Paid parking is available in the Cambridge Public Library's underground garage.

Sennott Park, 305 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA, Cambridge, MA, USWhat: Open social
When: Sunday, November 1st, 2pm
Where: Sennott Park, 305 Broadway, Cambridge
Run By: SkylerIf you can only make it to one or two meetups a year, this is the big social most other folks will be at. There's no required reading, workshops, or other specific agenda for this, just show up and talk to interesting people! If you're new to Astral Codex Ten and wondering what this is all about, see: https://astralcodexten.substack.com/about
This meetup is announced on the blog in conjunction with other spring ACX Everywhere meetups in other cities around the world. It’s probably going to be a bit chilly, you may want a jacket. Kids and pets welcome, it’s a park with a playground right next to it. We’ll have pizza coming after around three or four pm.
Please feel free to come even if you feel awkward about it, even if you’re not ‘the typical ACX reader’, and even if you’re worried people won’t like you. When you show up, look for the guy in the tall striped hat, possibly near a canopy in case it rains.
If you'd like to hear about other ACX events in Boston, you can find our email list, facebook group, and other places we announce meets here: https://linktr.ee/bostonacx
