PLEASE NOTE: KAYAKS AT LEAST 12 FEET LONG WITH FLOTATION ARE REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT. NO EXCEPTIONS.
This is one of the reasons I love spending summers in this unique state. In this mini-adventure you experience a taste of much of what Maine has to offer in one easy paddle. Islands, beautiful coastline, a lighthouse, schooners, gold doubloons and dastardly pirates (well, maybe not doubloons and dastardly pirates so much, I actually haven't seen one in a while). Anyway, we're all looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones! Aaargh!
We will meet at Steamboat Landing in Camden at 8:30 am for a 9 am launch. Take Sea St (it's a few blocks north of downtown Camden) east off Route 1. Follow ALMOST to the end to where you see a small blue sign "Boat Launch." Turn left there. You drive a block, will see the boat launch on the right, where you will unload your boat and gear. There are no restrooms at this launch. We will direct you to nearby parking from the launch area.
Due to limited parking we are limiting this to 8 paddlers.
Weather conditions will determine the extent of our journey. We will be paddling at a moderate pace. Bring a snack and something to drink as we have a bit of a picnic on Curtis Island during our hike there.
Our route takes us around Northeast Point and Mouse Island, then to historic Curtis Island where we will land to eat our packed snacks and have a short walk around. After our hike, we'll explore the rest of the harbor by kayak, navigating among the classic schooners and sailboats. Our adventure will take 3 hours more or less.
This is for strong intermediate to advanced paddlers only. It is assumed that paddlers know how to self-rescue in the event of an emergency. Kayaks must be 12 feet long minimum with flotation. We will be out on open water for part of this paddle. For safety's sake we are not allowing inflatable kayaks.
We will be wearing PFD's/whistles in accordance with boating regulations.
If you are not feeling at the top of your game, please pass on this event. Covid is not finished with us yet.
