Left alone, oak trees will live for 600-1,000 years. The oaks in Whitewebbs wood stood as part of a royal hunting forest, the Chase. A mature oak passed by along today's path bore witness to at least Tudor Monarchs, the oldest among them will have seen Plantagenets.

Modernity has lost any sense of whence it has come. Nowadays, avaricious eyes value only real estate, in the place these noble hulks call home, and the ancient forest is under threat. So visit them now, while there is still time.

Trent Park was also once part of the hunting forest. George III then presented 200 acres to his favourite physician, Dr Richard Jebb, for having saved the life of his brother the Duke of Gloucester at Trento in the Tyrol, hence the name. The landscape here is 18th-C elegance, an avenue of lime trees, lakes and an orangery.

The walk ends at Cockfosters, a name derived from 'foresters' - ending the crossing of the ancient royal forest.

TRAVEL DETAILS - Contactless and Oyster friendly walk
The 9.13 train from Liverpool Street (Seven Sisters 9.31) arrives at TURKEY STREET (Zone 6) at 9.45 AM. Walk starts from Turkey Street at 9.45 AM. Walk ends at COCKFOSTERS (Zone 5) on the Piccadilly Line. Oyster contactless & travelcards cover all travel.

Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel - this gives everyone the freedom and choice. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered.

As most of our trips are confirmed or postponed very close to the event date - heavily depending on the weather forecasts - we advise not to buy this until the last minute. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.

An opportunity to visit Meetup favourite St Martha's Hill from a different direction and for the lowest train fare from London. Maximum Martha hike for minimum money 🤗

In 1718 the antiquarian John Aubrey described the lovely hilltop view over "this Romancy Vale." Aubrey found interest no doubt in the summit remains of Bronze Age henges. Might they be the origin of the hill's previous name "Martyr's Hill"? The church on the top is a 19th-C reconstruction using material from the 11th-C original. Among the hill's permanent residents is Bernard Freyberg, or "Salamander".

For those wanting a shorter 12 miles walk option you will end at Clandon for the return train.

TRAVEL: Take the 9.33 AM train from London Waterloo to HORSLEY. Walk starts 10.25 am from Horsley station. Circular walk. Snack stop at Newlands Corner. Summit stop. Pub stop options later in the walk. Bring a packed lunch.

Buy an offpeak day return to HORSLEY which is £12.05 with Groupsave or a Network card.

If opting for the shorter walk you will need an offpeak return to Clandon which is £13.30 with Groupsave or a Network card.

The organiser will be standing from 9.15 am in front of the ticket office at Waterloo to act as a focal point for people to arrange Groupsave tickets.
