Tinsley Galyean | Redefining Global Literacy Through Curiosity + Tech | BayChi
Internet Archive, Internet Archive, 300 Funston Ave, San Francisco, CA, USLight dinner served at 6:30pm PT. Feel free to bring your own if you prefer. We strive to support both in-person and remote attendance, so we'll also fire up the Zoom at that point to support virtual socializing.
Abstract
Join Tinsley Galyean, co-founder and CEO of Curious Learning, for an exploration into the potential of eradicating global illiteracy through a revolutionary computer-human interface. Founded on "astonishing" research showing that children in remote villages could learn to read using mobile apps alone, Curious Learning leverages the global proliferation of smartphones to provide localized, high-impact literacy tools to the 1.25 billion people currently unable to read. This talk will define mobile technology not merely as a tool, but as a "new medium" that fundamentally changes how learners interact with educational content through intuitive touchscreens and engaging, data-driven gameplay.
Bio
Tinsley Galyean was among the first ten Ph.D. graduates from the MIT Media Lab and has spent decades pioneering children’s media and user experience design. He holds multiple patents and has created innovative media experiences for Disney, Warner Brothers, and Discovery Kids—earning an Emmy nomination for his work. As CEO and Co-Founder of Curious Learning, a global nonprofit, he’s driven by a mission to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn to read. Tinsley’s ever present curiosity fuels his latest book, Reframe: How Curiosity and Literacy Can Redefine Us, which explores how these powerful forces can shape individuals and societies. His work continues to push the boundaries of learning, technology, and human potential. Central to this mission is the recognition that the greatest barriers to success are often internal: the "limiting beliefs" that reside in our minds and organizational structures. Galyean will detail a transformative process for "mining" and "vetting" these beliefs—such as the misinterpretation of "no child left behind" or rigid adherence to failing curricula—that often obscure our vision of what is possible.

UX Life & Careers, weekly working session: Birds of a Feather (BOF)
·OnlineOnlineOur weekly working sessions for those in the UX Life and Careers BOF. The BOF draws a lot of interest from folks who are looking for new opportunities or those who are otherwise looking for more depth than we do in our monthly one-hour evening meetings.
This weekly session is a longer networking and/or co-working time especially for those looking for support as they seek new opportunities, hosted by Edwin.
So if you want to work alongside other folks on their UX life tasks, especially job search activities, whether resume s, portfolio work, or other such tasks, or if you want to ask for feedback from other UX folks on various aspects of UX, this is a weekly meeting via Zoom meant for support and company.
Wednesdays at 3:30pm, just fire up the the same link you'll have received for the monthly UX Life And Careers BOF.
Note that the plan is to run these every week, even if there's no BayCHI calendar event. The BayCHI calendar doesn't currently support recurring events, so I will most likely not create a calendar event for every week in the year.
One registration for that series will provide a link that will be good for all subsequent meetings and work sessions in this series.

You're welcome to join these working sessions, of course, and don't forget our monthly BayCHI UX Life and Careers BOF meetings on the 4th Tuesday of each month (7pm), which shares the same Zoom meeting URL that you'll get from ^that registration page.
As with the monthly meetings, check-in, see how others are doing, share what you're running into, and ask for whatever support you need.
